Top "10" Professional Reading List for Educators - 2016 Version

by Joseph M. Crozier, GWAEA Chief Administrator

Each year, I compile a list of professional reading that brings to light my personal and professional focus on personal improvement, leadership, education reform. The list includes my favorites from the past year as well as recommendations from colleagues, and this year’s list also includes a book that focuses on working with a variety of generations in the workplace.

While creating a culture of life-long learning is often a goal for all organizations, today more than ever that goal is more complex because of the variety of demographics in the workplace.  The common tie across Millennials, Gen Xers and Boomers is that they’re all committed to success in their workplace, but demonstrate their needs in different ways.

They have a different approach to accomplishing their goals, and they ask for support from their leadership in different ways. It behooves each leader in every organization to tap into the talents that this unique generational mix provides to ensure its organization continues to learn and grow each year.

Compiling the “Top 10” reading list each year has provided me multiple opportunities to reflect on my own personal learning as I continually seek to become a better educational leader and servant to our clients.  As I lead an organization that includes 20 percent Millennials and 50 percent Gen Xers (and a scattered mix of Boomers who still support our services and programs), I look forward to reflecting on the learning from this reading to help lead my organization.
