Questions

  1. When I try to access the Wiki, I get an error message that says my browser "can't establish a connection to the server at podcast.gwaea.org:16080.” How can I correct that?

  2. How can I add one of the Wiki's RSS feeds to my Google Reader?

  3. I can't play any of the Podcasts on the Wiki. How can I make this work?

  4. When I try to add one of the Wiki's RSS feeds to my Google Reader, I get an error message similar to these: Feeds matching "feed://podcast.gwaea.org:16080/groups/mediatechnology/blog/index.rss" OR Safari can't open the page "feed://podcast.gwaea.org:16080/groups/mediatechnology/blog/index.rss" because Safari can't load any data from this location. How do I successfully add the RSS feed subscription to my Google Reader?

Answers

  1. If you get an error message from your browser that says "can't establish a connection to the server at podcast.gwaea.org:16080," it means that your browser is being directed to use port 16080, which is usually closed at the server level at most companies and organizations, including many schools. The way to correct this is to change the 16080, or whatever port you are seeing in the error message, to 80. That is the most commonly used open port. That should correct the problem. So to get to the Grant Wood AEA Media and Technology Wiki, you would enter http://podcast.gwaea.org:80/groups/mediatechnology

  2. The most sure-fire way to add an RSS feed to your Google Reader is to find the RSS link icon or RSS link URL that you want to add. Point your mouse at the icon or RSS link URL. Right-click or Control-click on it and choose "Copy Link" or "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Link URL," whichever one shows in the pop-up menu. Then sign in to your Google account and go to Google Reader. Once there, click on the "Add a Subscription" button and a small window will open up with an empty box. Paste into that box the link URL you just copied from the Wiki. Then click "Add." That's it. The RSS feed will be added to your Google Reader.

  3. First, the best software to use for Podcasts is Apple's iTunes.  Go to www.apple.com/itunes/download.  Then download your version and install it (or have it installed by your tech people). Most browsers will allow you to choose iTunes (once it is installed) for RSS feeds and subscriptions. One possible exception would be Microsoft's Internet Explorer in Windows.  Microsoft generally makes it very difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get it’s applications talk to Apple applications such as iTunes.  If that is the case for you, here is a workaround. find the RSS link icon or RSS link URL that you want to add. Point your mouse at the icon or RSS link URL. Right-click or Control-click on it and choose "Copy Link" or "Copy Link Location" or "Copy Link URL," whichever one shows in the pop-up menu. Then open iTunes.  Pull down the “Advanced” menu and select “Subscribe to Podcast.”  Paste the URL into that box and click “OK.”  iTunes will subscribe you to that Podcast RSS feed and download the first one.  Double-click the first podcast and enjoy!

  4. The ":16080" tells you that your browser is being directed to use port 16080, which is usually closed at the server level at most companies and organizations, including many schools. The way to correct this is to change the 16080, or whatever port you are seeing in the error message, to 80. That is the most commonly used open port. That should correct the problem. In this case, your browser is generating an RSS feed URL like this: "feed://podcast.gwaea.org:16080/groups/mediatechnology/blog/index.rss" You need to copy that URL, use the "Add a Subscription" button in Google Reader, paste the URL into the empty box, then change the URL to read "feed://podcast.gwaea.org:80/groups/mediatechnology/blog/index.rss" before you click the "Add" button. That should work.
