The Department will present details about Iowa’s waiver request and plans to develop a new accountability system that puts student achievement first but also focuses on student growth and assessments that align with the Iowa Core standards.
In September, the U.S. Department of Education invited states to apply for flexibility from specific requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act in exchange for rigorous and comprehensive state-developed plans.
Iowa’s application will be submitted by Feb. 21.
States must address the following principles in their waiver applications:  College and career-ready expectations for all students; state-developed systems for differentiated recognition, accountability and support; and support for effective instruction and leadership, including new guidelines for local teacher and principal evaluation and support systems.
In a new video, Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass addresses the purpose of Iowa’s waiver request.
Iowans who are unable to attend the public meetings can submit comments in writing to until 4 p.m. on Feb. 1.

iPad Update 1/13/12

by Stacy Behmer, Coordinator of Digital Learning

Agency Purchased Apps Update
We have had all of the sessions to distribute Agency Apple IDs and redeem codes to people who placed their orders. If you were unable to attend a session, you will need to stop by iPad Central during help desk times to get your ID and codes. We are copying and pasting as a fast as we can. If you already have your Agency Apple ID you should have your Google Doc with codes in the next week.  Let us know if you have questions about how to redeem your codes. MAKE SURE YOU REDEEM YOUR CODES USING YOUR AGENCY APPLE ID!

iPad Care

The agency purchased cases for iPads and I am asking that you please keep your iPad as protected as possible. I was saddened to see at a region meeting an iPad that was in not so good shape (numerous cracks in the screen) and we have only had them out a few months and it wasn't even in the case!  Keeping it in a case will help protect it if it is dropped.  These are agency devices and we expect them to be taken care of. I understand things happen, but since cases were provided there is an expectation that those be used or another case you purchased to protect the device.

As far as keeping the screens clean, I'd suggest keeping a microfiber cloth handy and you can wipe it off. We will do some more research and let you know, but feel free to share what is working for you.

Facetime/Messaging Accounts
If you would like to use Facetime or the Messaging feature with another agency employee set your contact information as your Agency Apple ID gwaea10+first initial last Everyone in the agency follows this pattern, so it will be easy to figure out how to reach them. Share your account and access the list on the GWAEA iPad Google Site. We will be having PD about how to use these communication tools coming soon.

Want to Get More Efficient? There’s an App for That!

Want to cut 15 minutes out of your daily paperwork processing time? There’s an app for that. Knowing your way around the new versions of Word or Excel could save you minutes of hunting and frustration and make you ultimately more efficient!
If you’re one of the people who got a new, replacement PC with the 2010 version of Microsoft Office installed on it, you may be “muddling through” using the new Word or Excel interface . We suggest you take the upcoming training sessions on Word and Excel in February. Either training (or both) will give you a clearer understanding of how to make optimum use of the new ribbon interface to maximize your efficiency and effectiveness with this software.
