Protecting Your (and the Agency's) Email Accounts

A high number of emails continue to slip through our spam filtering system that supposedly come from tech support or the "help desk." In each case, no one's name is listed on the document as the contact person, and the email ALWAYS asks the individual to send a reply email with their address and email password. The message routinely includes some veiled threat that the user's account may be terminated if they don't comply.

Please DO NOT RESPOND to these emails. If the agency contacts you about your email account, such a message will come from Mike Hauer or George Held. In no situation will we send a request for you to submit your email address and password. Please ignore the phishing messages and delete them.

If you have not yet changed your password for your emails, please do so. For more information about how to create a stronger password, please refer to our Sept. 10, 2010 issue of The Bulletin Board where we shared some tips about how to do this.

Flood Gates Being Fitted

The photo (left) shows the first of the gates being fitted for the flood wall. Should the devices ever need to be put in place, the gates have a rubber base to seal the gap between the walkway and the gate. Each flood gate will have tension screws on the top of each side, which will be secured to hold the floodgate firmly down against the ground.

EdInsight: Iowa's Data Warehouse

edinsight

For the past several years, the Iowa Department of Education has been building a data warehouse, a collection of data from a variety of sources and organized so that reporting and analysis of those data are straightforward. The name of Iowa’s data warehouse is EdInsight.

The data currently in EdInsight are:

  • Assessment Data.  These student level information come from ITBS and ITED.

  • Special Education.  These selected student level data come from IMS.

  • Enrollment and Curriculum Data.  These selected student level data come from the Fall, Winter and Spring Project EASIER collections.

At the present time, a number of pre-formatted reports have been developed in EdInsight.  In addition to the pre-formatted reports, another analytical tool, the data cube, is part of EdInsight.  It is anticipated that the data cube will be offered to people who use powerful analytical tools such as SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), SQL (Structured Query Language) or pivot tables in Excel.

The AEAs and the DE are partnering in the statewide training rollout.  The goal is to have at least one user in each district trained by the end of the 2010-11 school year and to have at least one user in each building trained by the end of the 2011-12 school year.

Kelly Jones, Gregory Dunn and Michelle Tressel are leading the training rollout of EdInsight in Area 10. Further information on training will be forthcoming.

Agency Measurements Google Site

The Agency’s Strategic Priorities Measurements and Metrics are now available via a Google site: https://sites.google.com/a/gwaea.org/gwaea-measurement-site/home.

This site provides all staff with information about the key activities under each Agency priority, and will be the location where periodic updates are posted. The first round of updates are being completed now through January and will be viewable in red text at the bottom of each priority page. Please take a few moments to get familiar with the site. Thanks!

For questions, contact Trace Pickering, ext. 6550.

Vending Machine Provider Changing

In compliance with a legislative rule, the agency will be changing from its current supplier for the agency's vending machines. Beginning this month, the vending will be provided by the Iowa Department for the Blind.

The current pop machines will remain in place, and the ownership of the machines will be transferred to the DOB. The food vending machines will be switched.  Pricing for pop and water will be $1.25. A new coffee machine will be installed in the East break room of the Sixth Street office.

Thank you!

Thank you everyone for saving the Yoplait pink lids for me!  I sent in exactly 700 on Christmas Eve and am thrilled with the amount we saved and helped contribute for breast cancer research.

I would also like to thank everyone for all of the donations for the Vinton Animal Shelter tree!  We actually delivered it on Christmas day and were able to spend a little time with all the cats and give rawhides to all the dogs.  Every animal should be loved everyday, especially on Christmas day and they were. It is wonderful to work with such a caring group of people.  Thank you again!
