Grant Wood AEA Board of Director Elections

Five of the agency’s board member terms were up for re-election this year. All five current board members sought re-election to their seats, and the districts they represent elected them to serve once again. As a result, the Board for 2011-12 has not changed from last year. Four of the five board members were sworn in at Wednesday night’s board meeting. The five individuals who were re-elected were Robert Schneider, James C. Green, Marlene L. These area schools have been awarded mini-grants to provide after-school programs to support instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The grants are designed to help schools provide fun, exciting and educationally sound supplemental after-school programs to youth in grades 3 through 8.

Schools will be asked to recruit a diverse student population to participate in these programs. Each site will accommodate up to 30 students and they will provide weekly hands-on learning activities for the students. In addition, schools will be asked to form partnerships with local businesses, and support organizations like the ISU Extension, Workplace Learning Connection, Science Station, and the Grant Wood AEA VAST Center to help meet desired outcomes.

Yukiko Hill, Grant Wood AEA’s Teacher-In-Residence for 2011-2012, will provide support and professional development for teachers and support personnel as they connect the after-school activities to the every day instruction and curriculum in the district.

Jim Thornton, former administrator from the Cedar Rapids School District, is coordinating the grant on behalf of Grant Wood AEA.  Thornton explained, “The participating schools will be chronicling their work this year so that schools wishing to replicate their projects across the state can benefit in the future. We are hopeful that we will be able to show growth in not only interest in STEM-related fields of study, but an increased awareness and knowledge of STEM careers and the opportunities that are available in the Corridor and the State of Iowa.”

The iPads Are Coming! The iPads Are Coming!

We are getting the iPads ready to distribute to staff starting next week. There is a Google Doc with the list of orientation times for specific staff. We would like to get them to everyone as soon as possible, but with the new iOS just released last week and getting such a large quantity please be patient.  Please read the directions on this document carefully and attend the time you are assigned. If you do not have an assigned time, sign up for an open orientation (the form is linked in the document).

GWAEA is very fortunate to have staff who have been using this tool already and they are going to help support us in sharing how we can utilize a variety of apps with students in the districts we serve. Your iPad will come with apps preloaded and ready to use, but you will be able to add more!

You MUST attend an orientation in order to receive your iPad.
Orientations will cover:

  • expectations for use

  • how to charge your iPad

  • how to get apps

  • how to get agency email and your Google calendar

  • resources to learn about the iPad

  • upcoming professional development opportunities

  • registration to GWAEA iPad Staff user group

  • link to the GWAEA iPad Project Website

  • help desk and supports in place

I am excited for the the potential impact these tools will have on student learning!  I want to thank you in advance for your patience and positive attitudes as we head forward in this endeavor. Please feel free to email me (Stacy Behmer) if you have questions.
