Flood Wall Update - October 22

This past week, the footings and concrete were poured for the east side wall. An exhaust fan was removed from the area that was LONG ago a dark room in preparation for water proofing the north wall.

Next week work will begin on the southwest entrance near the board room and receptionist. This entrance will be unavailable for a period of about two weeks, once construction starts. The receptionist will remain in the usual place with signage to direct visitors to the front desk. We will add a monitor to display schedule and room assignments on the wall near the southeast entrance.

Work was to begin on the southeast entry first but concerns about having this available in time for the general election on November 2 made us change to completing the southwest entrance first. We should see digging begin on the west side of the building late next week and some digging on the north side to clear the way to water-proof the north wall. Contractors have been moving dirt to the north side of the building instead of hauling it away. This will allow us to fill many of the low spots in this area.

Ensuring Success: Iowa Core in Action
A Day of Learning on Dec. 14 with
Sarah Brown Wessling
National Teacher of the Year

iowacore

This full day workshop on Dec. 14 will provide AEA 10 staff members with an opportunity to experience learning facilitated by Sarah Brown Wessling, National Teacher of the Year and Iowa’s Teacher of the Year.

Iowa Core Outcomes 4 and 6 are the focus of this workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their own roles and practices and consider how they might integrate Sarah’s approach and philosophy to improve teaching and learning leading to higher levels of student achievement.

See the attached flyer for registration information.

First Responders Identified for Agency Facilities

The following individuals are now certified for first responder help if someone at an agency facility is hurt or suffers a heart attack:

Sixth Street Office:
·        George Held (6714)
·        Karen Michalec (6821)
·        Myka Peterson (6478)
·        Paul Kiburz (6765)
·        Stacy Murphy (6888)

33rd Avenue Office:

·        Laura Swiser (VAST Center)

Coralville Office:

·        Barb Aanonson (6211)
·        Johanna Rundlett (6212)
·        Elizabeth Steffensmeier (6210)

Also, all three offices have AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) and emergency first aid kits in cases of an emergency. All of the first responders have been trained to use the AEDs.

If you need a first responder, you can page them by pressing the intercom button on any desk phone in the agency and then dial 1895. State your emergency and the building where you are located.

To ensure that the first responders know where to go, stay on the line and repeat at least twice what building you are in and the location within the building. If it appears that a defibrillator is needed, be sure to say that, too.

Access lynda.com Resources for Technology Training

lynda

Are you looking for a more sophisticated training on a certain technology application? We now provide access to lynda.com for staff to use. lynda.com is a robust online tutorial service that covers applications from Microsoft, Google, Apple, Adobe, and much more. lynda.com has a similar interface and style as AtomicLearning.com,  but their videos go much more in depth on certain topics within applications.

If you would like to try lynda.com, you can do it in a few ways. If you are at Sixth Street, Coralviile, or 33rd Avenue locations, simply go to http://iplogin.lynda.com. No username or password is needed. Two users can access at one time. If you are off campus, you will need a username and password. We have a few of these to give out to users temporarily. If you need a username and password, please contact Andy Crozier.

Roses at Sixth Street Office to Be Removed

The agency will no longer have roses at the Sixth Street office as part of its landscaping. Though many of the staff members have enjoyed the beauty of the roses, this decision came about due to numerous reasons including time, cost, and increasing insect challenges. The rose bushes at the facility will be available for adoption by agency staff only and will be available at no charge.

If you are interested in "adopting" one of these roses, please contact George Held (x6714) or Kim Martin (x 6710). We will assign numbers to the roses, and individuals who have expressed an interest in adopting the plants will be assigned a rose/s randomly. Official rose adoption day will be the morning of Saturday, Nov. 13. Staff who are adopting the roses will be given instructions for best practice for how to remove the bushes from the agency grounds and replanting them.

Dr. Fielder, the agency's rose expert, says November is the ideal time of year to replant roses. It is a time when the roses have gone dormant, but it is before the ground has frozen for the winter.

If interest in the rose adoptions exceeds the number of plants available, we will determine who will receive the roses based on when staff contact Kim or George.

Are You an Influencer?

Are you facing challenges in your work that have you stumped?  Have you said to yourself, “I give up!”  Are you someone who wants to make a difference?  Do you wish you had more influence on others?

Please join us in the opportunity to explore and learn from influence experts about the skills and strategies of influence as shared in the book, Influencer.  We will examine the six sources of influence as described by the authors and through conversation with each other, share and grow the practice of influence strategies in our own work!

We will be meeting on the following dates from 3:30– 4:30 p.m.:
12/1/10 – Staff Conference Room, 6th St.
1/24/11 – Staff Conference Room, 6th St.
2/15/11- Staff Conference Room, 6th St.
4/6/11 – Room 221, 33rd Ave.

Please RSVP to Kelley Martin by November 8.   Please indicate if you plan to attend all of the dates or which dates you think you will be attending; and if you need an Influencer book.  Also indicate if you have an interest participating via Skype from the Coralville office.
