Policy Update – Separation Plan

Under recent Board policy, the Board was to make a decision each November about the availability of a separation plan for the following year.  In accordance with this policy, the Board determined in November 2010 there would be no separation plan available for this year (2011-12).  This policy is to be reviewed annually and at the most recent Board meetings on Oct 19 and Nov 9 the Board considered and approved a language change regarding the November timeline.  Since the separation plan is intended to be used as part of a fiscal management plan, the language change provides for the Board to make a more timely decision regarding the availability of a plan.

Under the new policy language, the Board will make a decision about offering a separation plan in the year that they review the plan, rather than a year in advance.  There was no change in the Board’s decision regarding a separation plan for this year – no plan is available for 2011-12.  The Board will determine no later than November 2012 whether a separation plan will be available for the 2012-13 work year.  The Policy Committee plans to review the policy language more thoroughly in Spring 2012 to consider whether other changes may be appropriate for supporting the Agency’s planning needs.

To view the early separation policy, go to the following link: Separation Policy.

If there are questions about this policy, please feel free to contact any of the following Policy Committee members:

Joe Crozier, Chief Administrator (ext. 6710 or jcrozier@gwaea.org)
Kim Martin, Board Secretary (ext. 6711 or kmartin@gwaea.org)
George Held, Communications Supervisor (ext. 6714 or gheld@gwaea.org)
Jackie Schreder, HR Coordinator (ext. 6731 or jschreder@gwaea.org)

Education Blueprint Discussion with Legislators

An Education Blueprint discussion will be held on Tuesday, December 13, in the Grant Wood AEA conference center, 4401 Sixth St. SW, in Cedar Rapids from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The purpose of the event is to allow constituents to visit with area legislators – state senators and state representatives – about the Governor’s blueprint. Quite a few area legislators will be attending.  This will not be an evening of speeches and presentations. Instead, it will be breakout discussions about various aspects of the plan and what you think of the ideas, with legislators asking questions and taking notes.

We encourage you to attend and/or to tell others who might want to attend. Your input may help guide legislators in how to make Iowa’s education system the best it can possibly be.
