Administrative Structure Changes for 2012-2013

In February, the Agency posted 2.0 FTE Regional Administrator vacancies for the upcoming school year. One of these vacancies was created by the resignation of Janine Wahl. Janine resigned mid-year and her responsibilities were filled by re-assigning Jill Weigel, on a temporary basis, to the Central Region and then hiring Jim Barth and Bob Lehman as substitute administrators to provide Regional Administrator support to the Off-Site Region for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Marsha Reitzler, RA in the SW Region, has submitted her letter of retirement effective at the end of this school year. Consequently, the Agency moved forward with posting and advertising 2.0 FTE Regional Administrator openings for the 2012 – 2013 school year. In addition to the Regional Administrator vacancies, Trace Pickering, Coordinator of Innovation and Organizational Effectiveness, resigned his position effective December, 2011.

Terri McGraw, Programs/Services Administrator (PSA), requested and was approved to return to a Regional Administrator position. This move created the following administrative vacancies: 1.0 FTE for Regional Administrator; 1.0 FTE for Programs/Services Administrator; 1.0 FTE for Coordinator of Innovation and Organizational Effectiveness.

As with every job opening, the Agency carefully examined the need to fill each position. Following that examination, the decision was made to restructure these administrative positions. Consequently, the Agency will not immediately replace the vacant Programs/Services Administrator position or the Coordinator of Innovation and Organizational Effectiveness vacancy. Instead, the Agency has hired 2.0 FTE Regional Administrators in addition to honoring Terri’s request to move to an RA position. This shift provides the Agency with the opportunity to redistribute the management team. Therefore, the Agency will actually be functioning with one less administrative position for the 2012 – 2013 school year. The Agency Cabinet Team has determined these administrative changes will best support the priorities and needs of the Agency at this time.

The two new RAs for next year are Mr. Robert Cassidy and Mr. Josh Lyons. Mr. Lyons currently serves as the principal at Strawberry Hill Elementary in Anamosa, Iowa. Mr. Cassidy currently serves as the K-12 principal in Ventura, Iowa. Mr. Lyons and Mr. Cassidy are experienced administrators and bring excellent skill sets to the position of Regional Administrator. Management assignments for next year have not yet been determined.

We appreciate your patience as we continue to make decisions about administrative assignments that will best meet the interests of clients and staff. As always, if you have questions, please call your manager, PSA, or Maria.

DIBELS NEXT Norms Announcement

DIBELS NEXT percentile ranks are now available.  They can be accessed on the Educators link on our home page

Percentile rankings are a way to rank and sort students in comparison to their peers.
Benchmarks are research based predictors of successful literacy development.

The new norm tables now have the raw score on the right and left columns and the percentile ranks are in the body of the table.  This is a change from our previous “blue book” norms.

The spreadsheet view has tabs along the bottom showing the grade and the testing period.  By clicking the time of year, you will be able to see the appropriate norms for that time of year.

The printed page will have the grade and testing period in the header (left corner) while the footnotes have a key that tells what fluency measure each abbreviation represents.

The percentiles are color coded in reference to the benchmarks as follows:
RED represents “well below benchmark” for students who are likely to need intensive support.
GOLD represents “below benchmark” for students who are likely to need strategic support.
GREEN represents “at or above benchmark” for students who are likely to need core support.
If percentiles are not color coded, that indicates there are no benchmark goals set for that assessment or at that grade.

The DIBELS Next percentile ranks were released October 18, 2011.

Severe Weather Preparations at GWAEA

Tornado Drill planned Wednesday, April 4, at 10 a.m.

On Wednesday, April 4, at 10 a.m., the agency will have a tornado drill to prepare staff for possible severe weather situations we might have this spring.

The agency no longer uses the fire alarms to alert staff of tornados. Instead, you will hear an announcement over the speakers in the new the phone system throughout the building.

During a drill or during an actual tornado alert, when you hear we are under Tornado warning, please follow these steps:

  • Go immediately to the designated SAFE area closest to you.  See maps posted throughout the building and become familiar with the route suggested.

  • Do NOT go outside or try to call home.

  • Once you are in a SAFE area remain there until notified that the warning has been removed or has expired.

  • Secretaries should take their flashlights with them.

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado to form.
A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted in the area. We will alert staff in the building only when a Warning has been issued.

iPad Update 3/16/12

by Jonathan Wylie, Technology Consultant

Important Software Update
Make sure you update the software on your iPad!  To update to iOS 5.1 go to Settings > General > Software Update. You may need to plug in to do this update if your battery is below 50%.
Once the update is done, you will find updates for Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie and Garageband, but you need the latest software update for these apps. Update these in the usual manner, but be aware that you will have to agree to the new iTunes terms and conditions.

Another Reminder No More “”

We have removed access to the Apple Account. This means that you will not be able to update any apps that were downloaded on this account, or be able to sign in with this account to download any future apps. We have had some issues with people installing apps on that account and making purchases instead of using their agency Apple ID or personal Apple ID. This means the original apps that came on your device won’t be able to be updated. We are recommending you remove those apps and reinstall the ones you like on either your personal or agency account. Here are directions on how to transfer apps to another account.

App of the Week

This week’s App of the Week is iAnnotate, and it comes from Julie King - one of our school social workers. Julie likes the versatility of the PDF annotation tool and has come up with lots of ways to use it with the students and teachers she works with. Read more about iAnnotate on the GWAEA iPad Project Site. If you are interested in writing a review for App of the Week, email Jonathan or Stacy with your ideas.
