GWAEA Staff Recognition and Partnerships Banquet
Ms. Susan's Catering and Reception Hall, North Liberty

Aug. 18

GWAEA All-Agency Inservice, College Community, Concert Hall

The Agency Banquet Location Has Changed

Due to a variety of reasons, the agency banquet will not be held at Old Brick as previously announced. Instead, it will be held at Ms. Susan’s in North Liberty ( Since our “pop fund” will not completely cover the cost of the event and state law prohibits the agency from spending money on food for our staff, a small cost per person will be charged. Price per employee will be $5 and non-employees who wish to attend will pay $20 per person. An invitation to the event will be distributed to staff early next week. Reservations are required.
Among the individuals being recognized at the dinner will be Judy Jeffrey from the Iowa Department of Education. The facility will have a cash bar that serves both beer and wine. The Grant Wood AEA Band will also play following the awards ceremony.
If you would like to organize a group to sit together, you may. There are no round tables at Miss Susan’s – only rectangular tables seating 10 people per table. Groups may organize and reserve tables just as we have done in recent years. Details about this will be in the invitations.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Did you know that 5.3 million Americans have experienced a brain injury?  Someone has a traumatic brain injury every 23 seconds in the United States.  This information comes from the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA).

Please RSVP to Kelley Martin at or 399-6801 by April 30. Organizational Leadership Program application date extended to
March 19

Applications are now being accepted for Grant Wood AEA staff interested in applying for the 2010-2011 Organizational Leadership program.

The Organizational Leadership program is for staff who are actively preparing for future formal leadership positions. Participants will spend two years in the program, developing essential knowledge and skills for leading in an organization and working as a cohort group to learn and apply leadership and systems theory.

Each participant is assigned to a Leadership Advisor, who helps provide assignments and projects that expose them to areas different than their usual job.  Participants also participate in field experiences to observe and engage in dialogue with position leaders at work.  A small cohort of participants is selected each year through an application process.

Participants completing their second year in the cohort include Elizabeth Delsandro, Jenny Fitzpatrick, Mary Lukas, Loretta Mitvalsky and Melanie Reese.  This year Tammy Beener, Katy Lee, Tracy Liebermann, David Maiers and Jill Ries began their first year of leadership development.

Grant Wood AEA employees desiring to apply for this program must complete an application by Friday, March 19, 2010.  Click here for a link to the application or contact Lisa Fry at

Additional information regarding the Organizational Leadership Program can be found on the GWAEA website at the following address:

Half Price Books seeks donations for annual children's book drive

Half Price Book Stores are creating Half Pint Libraries.  They are accepting new or gently used books for theHalf Pint libraries at their stores through March 31, 2010.  These books will be donated to organizations working with families who have no books of their own.  I would like to encourage our staff to donate books to half price books to help the families our AEA staff works with. We could especially use board books appropriate for infants and toddlers.
