"Impacting Lives for 35 Years"

Iowa AEA’s celebrate 35 years of service to schools and communities

AEA anniversary logo

Iowa’s Area Education Agencies (AEAs) are celebrating 35 years of service to children, families, educators, and communities.

In 1974, the passage of Senate File 1163 established 15 area education agencies (AEAs) with the same service areas as community colleges. The AEAs began operation on July 1, 1975.

Through voluntary mergers in recent years, Iowa’s AEAs currently total 10, and will become a total of nine with the merger of Green Valley and Loess Hills AEAs on July 1, 2010.

With the establishment of the area education agency system, Iowa became a national leader in providing regional, intermediate educational services. The Iowa system continues to be among the most comprehensive and highly respected in the country.

Over the years, various legislative initiatives have added new and changing roles for AEAs. In 1996, the legislature approved an accreditation process under which AEAs must demonstrate they meet the standards as defined by the Iowa Department of Education. The scope of services of Iowa’s area education agencies expanded to
Include, “leadership and services in school improvement to schools and school districts so every learner may perform at higher education levels.”

Iowa AEAs are supporting the Iowa Department of Education and local school districts with implementation of the Iowa Core Curriculum.

Theme emphasizes partnership, a unified system
The theme of this year-long recognition is “Impacting Lives for 35 Years.” Members of the AEA Communications Committee have developed a unified brand (see above) that all AEAs will use throughout 2010 to recognize the system-wide 35th anniversary.

Watch for updates to be posted throughout the year on the Iowa AEA website at www.iowaaea.org.

Organizational Leadership Program applications due March 12

Applications are now being accepted for Grant Wood AEA staff interested in applying for the 2010-2011 Organizational Leadership program.

The Organizational Leadership program is for staff who are actively preparing for future formal leadership positions. Participants will spend two years in the program, developing essential knowledge and skills for leading in an organization and working as a cohort group to learn and apply leadership and systems theory.

Each participant is assigned to a Leadership Advisor, who helps provide assignments and projects that expose them to areas different than their usual job.  Participants also participate in field experiences to observe and engage in dialogue with position leaders at work.  A small cohort of participants is selected each year through an application process.

Participants completing their second year in the cohort include Elizabeth Delsandro, Jenny Fitzpatrick, Mary Lukas, Loretta Mitvalsky and Melanie Reese.  This year Tammy Beener, Katy Lee, Tracy Liebermann, David Maiers and Jill Ries began their first year of leadership development.

Grant Wood AEA employees desiring to apply for this program must complete an application by March 12, 2010.  Click here for a link to the application or contact Lisa Fry at lfry@aea10.k12.ia.us

Additional information regarding the Organizational Leadership Program can be found on the GWAEA website at the following address: http://www.aea10.k12.ia.us/leadership/ldrshipdev.html.
