2012 Grant Wood AEA Staff Recognition & Partnerships Banquet, Thursday, May 3

Nine individuals and one school will be honored at this year’s recognition banquet. Recipients of the agency’s Caring Colleague awards will be Lisa Twedt (graphics), Jonathan Wylie (technology team) and Julie Freed (SLP and assistive technology). Individuals who will be recognized for Educational Partners will be Joan Young, principal at Monticello High School; Traci Fryhauf, school nurse for the West Branch district; Shannon Guyer, a special education teacher at Monticello; and Iowa City’s Wickham School staff.

A single recipient for the Friends of Education is Tracy Klees a team leader from the north side Cedar Rapids Target Store.  The agency occasionally recognizes individuals who have contributed extensively to education in the area and often even more broadly. This year, we will honor two people – retiring superintendent of College Community school district and long-time AEA10 partner, Dick Whitehead, and Chuck Peters, head of Source Media, the holding company of KCRG-TV and The Gazette.

Also honored will be employees with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years of service awards.

Location:
Ponderosa Hall & Ballroom
195 1st Street S.

Walford
Social Hour: 5:30 p.m.
Dinner: 6:00 p.m.

iPad Update 4/20/12

by Stacy Behmer, Coordinator of Digital Learning Technology
sbehmer@gwaea.org

ipad

iPad MIA
We have an iPad that is missing! It was last seen at the 6th Street facility on Monday, April 16th. This iPad is in a larger lime green big grip case. If you see it please return it to Stacy Behmer.

Important Software Update
I’ve noticed that there are some devices out there that are still not updated and it is easy to do!
Make sure you update the software on your iPad!  To update to iOS 5.1 go to Settings > General > Software Update. You may need to plug in to do this update if your battery is below 50%.
Once the update is done, you will find updates for Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iMovie and Garageband, but you need the latest software update for these apps. Update these in the usual manner, but be aware that you will have to agree to the new iTunes terms and conditions.

Backing Up/ Locating Your Device- iCloud
We will be helping everyone set up iCloud when we see you at various meetings, but in order to set it up you NEED to have an Apple ID to backup your device. You may either use your agency Apple ID  gwaea10+name@gmail.com or you may use your personal account.

To turn on iCloud- Go to Settings > iCloud and type in your Apple ID and Sign in.
Then please turn on FIND MY iPAD. You may also turn on Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Documents & Data.

Doing this will let you:
1. Back up the data on your device
2. Let you log in to www.icloud.com and locate your device

Professional Development
On May 23, 2012 there will be another chance for you to brush up on your iPad skills because we will be running a full day workshop called iPad Basics: Essential Skills for Educators. The course description is as follows:

“Are you a new iPad user? Are you looking to learn more about how to use the iPad in education? This iPad basics class will show you how to navigate the App Store like a pro! It will explore the features you need to know in the Settings menu, teach you how to master the core apps, and reveal how to make the iPad accessible to all learners.”

If you are interested in attending, registration details will be on the GWAEA PD site early next week. This workshop is open to AEA and LEA staff, so please pass this information on to anyone you know who might be interested in attending.

Another Reminder No More “ipad@gwaea.org”
We have removed access to the ipad@gwaea.org Apple Account. This means that you will not be able to update any apps that were downloaded on this account, or be able to sign in with this account to download any future apps. We have had some issues with people installing apps on that account and making purchases instead of using their agency Apple ID or personal Apple ID. This means the original apps that came on your device won’t be able to be updated. We are recommending you remove those apps and reinstall the ones you like on either your personal or agency account. Here are directions on how to transfer apps to another account.

If you want to see a list of the apps that were on the ipad@gwaea.org account, stop by the help desk and pick up a sheet with them listed.

Green Hills AEA Center in Creston Badly Damaged by Tornado

The Green Hills AEA office in Creston received extensive damage during last weekend’s tornado. This YouTube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gsfbDv5qQg gives us a glimpse of the destruction. Area school districts and other partners have reached out to provide office space and other assistance. We’re glad that no one was injured!
