Get Involved!  GWAEA’s Brain Injury Resource Team…

Did you know that 5.3 million Americans have experienced a brain injury?  Someone has a traumatic brain injury every 23 seconds in the United States.  This information comes from the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA).

The Grant Wood AEA Brain Injury Resource Team (BIRT) provides consultation and information to Building Level Teams working with students with brain injuries.  We are always looking for additional members for our team.  Please consider being a BIRT Team member!

Join us at our next team meeting on Thursday, May 6, from 3-4 p.m. to see what we are all about or just to acquire further information about our team.  The meeting will be held at the Grant Wood AEA Life Skills location at 4050 River Ridge Drive NE, Cedar Rapids. Please RSVP to Kelley Martin at Kemartin@gwaea.org or 399-6801 by April 30. Popcorn will be provided, please bring your own beverage during our viewing of the DVD, “Pieces of the Puzzle: An Introduction to Brain Injury.”

Educational Technology ARRA Grant

Over the past few months, the AEA Media Directors and UENs from across the state have been working collaboratively to write a proposal for the Educational Technology ARRA Grant from the Department of Education. When the ARRA funds were released last summer, there was a small pot designated for educational technology. Rather than each AEA and UEN spending these funds on separate projects, we have collaborated statewide to focus on one area: K-12 Online Learning.

The purpose of this grant is to provide online learning opportunities for students, professional development for K-12 teachers to learn to teach online, and online credit recovery options for high school students. We are beginning the process of advertising for an Ed Tech ARRA Grant Specialist to manage this project and coordinate the efforts of the AEAs and UENs. This position is a 16 month position that will end in September of 2011.

Grant Wood AEA is serving as the fiscal agent of this grant and will therefore chair the hiring process and oversee the employment of this individual.  A joint selection committee with AEA and UEN representatives will be established to interview and select the best candidate for this position. We hope to have the selection made by May 18.

For questions about this position, please review the job description or contact Andy Crozier.
