Grant Wood AEA's Contemporary School Leadership Program

Applications for 2012-2013 due June 1

Grant Wood AEA's Contemporary School Leadership Program will enter its 16th year during the 2012-2013 school year.

The Contemporary School Leadership (CSL) program is based on a common core of learnings about contemporary leadership designed for the 21st century context of education. As a part of CSL, participants will meet monthly at Grant Wood AEA; complete application assignments between sessions to deepen their learning; and, present a final project to synthesize their learning.

See flyer for details.

CSL provides support for schools to develop and equip organizational leaders to understand the effects of transformational change in education and other industries. CSL leverages local resources and expertise to effectively position and advance districts in their efforts to create the Next Generation of schooling.

Participants have the opportunity to spend seven full days with Dr. Susan Leddick - one of the most respected and admired national leaders in educational design and transformation. CSL consistently produces teachers and administrators ready and able to effectively engage in and lead school change and improvement efforts. Over 500 area educators representing 33 school districts have participated in CSL.

Registrations for CSL must be completed by June 1, 2012. Online registration is available at

Congratulations to the honorees and Grant Wood AEA staff who will be honored during the 2012 Grant Wood AEA Staff Recognition and Partnerships Banquet on Thursday, May 3 at the Ponderosa Hall & Ballroom 195 1st St. S., in Walford. Social Hour: 5:30 p.m.; Dinner: 6:00 p.m.

Nine individuals and one school will be honored at this year’s recognition banquet. Recipients of the agency’s Caring Colleague awards will be Lisa Twedt (graphics), Jonathan Wylie (technology team) and Julie Freed (SLP and assistive technology). Individuals who will be recognized for Educational Partners will be Joan Young, principal at Monticello High School; Traci Fryhauf, school nurse for the West Branch district; Shannon Guyer, a special education teacher at Monticello; and Iowa City’s Wickham School staff.

Recycling with Rick

Just a reminder about recycling:

We can recycle plastic food containers and cans as long as they are clean.  You can put those in the recycle bins along with the recycled paper.

Around the building you can find bottle/can bins.  You can also put water bottles and recyclable materials in those since I sort those usually weekly.

As I pick up trash daily I find lots of materials (usually paper products) that are recyclable.  There are recycle bins located all around the agency.  I even have put a few boxes in cubicle areas upon request.  If you need to find out where any bins or recycling areas are please ask me.  Or if you want a box in your area I can find you one.

Let’s keep our building clean and green.

Assessment for Learning Course facilitated in collaboration with the Iowa DE Assessment Team

GWAEA staff members are invited to participate in this learning. Compensation will be provided through Iowa Core TQ.

Purpose: Provide facilitated learning through the Assessment for Learning PD modules posted on the Iowa Core PD Moodle site.  AEA 10 staff members will engage in valuable learning to increase effectiveness of data-driven instructional decision making.  Participants will be prepared to support AEA and LEA teams/colleagues in applying a formative assessment process.  Formative assessment implementation holds significant potential for improving teaching and learning for all students - especially students who struggle.
