iPad Update 5/11/12

by Stacy Behmer, Coordinator of Digital Learning Technology

IMPORTANT- iPad Usage Data Collection Time DUE ASAP!
When you received your agency iPad you agreed to provide usage data. The iPads have been in our hands for most of the year and our Board is interested in how we are using the devices. We need to get some initial baseline data about if and how they are helping us meet our agency goals.

  • develop and use data systems that measure the impact of your decisions and actions

  • utilize resources efficiently and effectively

  • advance learning, innovation and creativity

  • develop integrated, customized solutions for the schools you work with

  • implement effective service delivery

We are also asking ALL staff who received an iPad to complete the survey and those who have received agency purchased apps to give us some additional information about what apps they received and how they are using them.

Please take 10 minutes to complete the survey to provide us with this information and share any stories about how you are using the device in your work. The link to the survey is on the GWAEA iPad website or can be found here:
You need to be logged into your Google Account to complete the survey.

We need all of the data as soon as possible. Please complete the survey by Friday, May 18, 2012. Thank you and contact Stacy Behmer, if you have any questions.

Small iOS Update Now Available from Apple - iOS 5.1.1
No major changes, but always worth updating for extra stability and bug fixes.
To update, go to Settings, General and tap Software Update. The patch is about 42mb so if you have a decent amount of battery you will not likely need to plug in for this update.

iPad Still MIA
We have an iPad that is missing! It was last seen at the 6th Street facility on Monday, April 16th. This iPad is in a larger lime green big grip case. If you see it please return it to Stacy Behmer.  Remember to turn iCloud on on your device, so you will be able to locate your iPad remotely if you ever misplace it.

Final App Order of the Year
We are opening the Agency iPad App Order one more time this year.  There are 3 different kinds of people who could be ordering apps, read carefully, so you know who you are and how many apps you may order at this time. We will be placing another order when people return in August. If you don’t know how many apps you have previously ordered you may go to Google Docs and search for your doc with iPad Redeem Codes and that will tell you how many and what apps you have already been given. NO APP ORDERS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE DATA COLLECTION SURVEY.

1. If you have completed the data collection survey and have previously ordered 10 apps then you may order 3 additional apps.
2. If you have completed the data collection survey and have previously ordered fewer than 10 apps then you may order 5 additional apps.
3. If you have completed the data collection survey and have not previously ordered any apps you may order up to 10. (You will need to attend a session to activate your Agency Apple ID and get your codes for the first time)

Orders are due Friday, May 25, 2012 at 4pm. No exceptions!

Message to all staff from Joe Crozier

The following message was delivered to all staff on Wednesday morning by email and video.
In case you missed it, we are including in today's issue of The Bulletin Board.

Hi. I wanted to share with you some decisions that we think our contracted staff may especially appreciate. In an earlier video about the budget I informed staff that there would be no staff reductions for general fund staff. We also allocated resources for the hiring of some additional staff.  As we review the budget and our agency reserves we have authorized the hiring of 15 more FTE with 11 of those positions going to the agency’s equity formula. All of these positions are in special education.  This means that if we successfully fill all of these openings we will have more staff providing direct service to our schools. We are attempting to get our licensed, direct service, special education staffing levels back up to what we had in 2010-11.
There are several reasons for this decision.

  • The state’s fiscal crisis appears to be easing off. Statewide reserves are growing again, and we don’t anticipate significant budget cuts in the long-term. We’ve even heard some of the legislators cautiously talking about better allowable growth rates for future years.

  • Some legislators have been critical of the AEAs’ fund balances. All of the AEAs have been cautious about reducing these balances because it was considered good management practice to protect the agency by having a high fund balance. Since the AEAs don’t have any taxing authority, we can’t adjust quickly to any budget cuts or emergency expenditures such as flood recovery. The fund balance gives us some flexibility.

  • That said, our fund balance has continued to grow in special education, which is a concern.  The best way for us to overcome this problem is for us to increase our licensed staff in the area of special education.

  • In the last couple of years we’ve changed our service delivery model; and we needed to make sure these approaches worked before we invested in them. We are seeing positive results in both the special ed literacy and behavior initiatives, and we want to increase staffing to support these programs.

I want to emphasize that we will be adding staff primarily for licensed, direct service positions in special education.
If you have any questions about this hiring decision, please feel free to contact me,
Maria Cashman
, Kris Donnelly, Lisa Fry or Terri McGraw. Thanks.

Recycling with Rick

Hello everyone:

Hey, I guess people do read this.  My recycling has picked up a bit.  Good job everyone.  Let’s keep up the good work.

Just remember also, those pop bottles/cans add up fast toward the employee banquet.  We did good this last year with our collections.  Keep it up.

If you have any questions if something is able to be recycled please ask me.  And if you need a box for your office/cubicle are let me know. I know they aren’t fancy (yet) but it keeps us all doing our part.

I have my recyle bins scheduled for Tuesday the 15th to be picked up and emptied so if you have recycle material in your area please empty them into the bins or get in touch with me and I can get them picked up. You can leave me a message on my phone at ext. 6715.
