Who’s On First?

There is a famous Abbott and Costello routine titled “Who’s on First?” where the two characters talk about various players of a baseball team and the nicknames of the players. “Who” was the nickname for the player on first base, which is only the beginning of the confusion for the person needing to know who is on first!

At the end of the school year, a number of management changes have been made for assignments and supervisors. We thought it would be helpful for everyone if we shared a list of who is responsible for what – regions and/or departments.

Health Benefits Update for All Grant Wood AEA Staff:

President Obama signed into law the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009 (CHIPRA).   This law extends and expands the state children’s health insurance program (CHIP) that was in place.

If it is determined you or your dependents are eligible for premium assistance under Medicaid or CHIP, Grant Wood AEA’s health plan will allow you and your dependents to enroll as long as you and your dependents are eligible and not already enrolled.  With this special enrollment opportunity, you must request coverage within 60 days of being determined eligible for premium assistance.

Attached is a communication that will be distributed annually to all Grant Wood AEA staff as notification of your rights. Further questions can be directed to Cathy Kearns, Grant Wood AEA Business Services at 399-6706 or ckearns@gwaea.org.

Notice to Grant Wood AEA Health Plan Participants:

The Metro Interagency Insurance Program (MIIP) board has decided to file an exemption to the mental health/substance abuse federal requirements for the 2010-11 plan year.  Attached is notification of the exemption for our plan participants.

Lodging Policy Update

This is an update to our lodging policy for travel in the Des Moines and Ames areas.  The agreement with Heart of America Hotels has been in place for over a year now and has been successful in reducing our travel costs.  Based on their review of our volume of room stays and other factors, there are three properties that are included in the agreement effective July 1, 2010.  To continue to control travel costs, employees are to stay at one of the three designated hotels when in Des Moines when overnight for Agency business travel (employees will not be eligible for lodging reimbursement at another unauthorized hotel, except under extenuating circumstances that would require prior approval from an executive administrator).  We have also identified a designated hotel in the Ames area since our number of stays there has increased during the last few years.

Please review the attached info regarding the list of designated hotels and business procedures for lodging reservations and payment.  If there are questions, please contact Amy Cameron at X6707 or Barb Harms at X6704.

Thank you

Thank you to the many Grant Wood AEA staff who have offered your kind words of condolence and support following the death of my mother, Catherine O’Connor McMaster. Your support means a lot to both David and me.

“The Agency” Will Play June 18

Several staff members have inquired about when the Grant Wood AEA staff rock band will play next. They now call themselves “The Agency,” and the group will be playing at the Secret Seller in Shueyville on Friday, June 18, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event will be an outdoor wine tasting event. To get there, take the Shueyville exit off I-380, turn east and go to the first stop sign. The “Seller” is in the blue house at that corner.

Chair Massages

Terri Nicol, LMT, will provide chair massages on Thursday, June 24, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The chair massages are 15 minutes long and cost $10. E-mail Stacy Murphy at stmurphy@aea10.k12.ia.us or call Ext. 6888 to schedule an appointment time.
