Texting ban begins July 1

Thanks in part to a national campaign sponsored by AAA, the act of composing, reading or sending electronic text messages while driving will become illegal in Iowa effective Thursday, July 1, 2010.
(Iowa Legislature, HF 2456)

Iowa joins 27 other states in enacting this legislation, which prohibits behind-the-wheel texting via cell phones, laptop computers plus a host of other wireless communication devices. Certain types of professional drivers and emergency situations will be exempt.

The Penalties for Texting
Under Iowa law, texting while driving will be classified as a secondary offense, which means you can only be stopped and ticketed when committing another citable traffic offense. Violators will face a fine of $30. Violations leading to serious injury or death can face fines up to $1,000 and a license suspension of up to 180 days. For novice drivers, texting while driving will be classified as a primary offense, which means you can be pulled over and ticketed based on a text messaging offense alone.

Brain Injury Association of Iowa Midwest Advocacy Project

Want to get involved and learn more about improving brain injury services but not sure how to go about it?

Becoming a successful advocate is an important way to improve services for individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI), their family members, and significant others.  The Brain Injury Association of Iowa is partnering with the Mayo Clinic TBI Model System in a research study to identify how to best teach advocacy to people touched by TBI to improve their health and that of their communities.  This groundbreaking study is expected to advance the science of TBI research.

If you are at least 18 years old and a person or family member/significant other affected by a moderate to severe TBI a year or more ago, you are invited to contact us about participating in this research study.  You will be asked to attend four monthly training sessions in Des Moines.  Travel expenses will be covered for those residing at least 60 miles from the training site.  All participants will receive a research stipend upon completion of the four sessions.

Please contact the Brain Injury Association of Iowa at: 1-800-444-6443 or info@biaia.org for additional information and/or an application.  Contribute to important TBI research and join with others eager to gain better advocacy skills and know-how.
