Judy Jeffrey Announces Statewide Student Performance Data

On Wednesday of this week, Judy Jeffrey, Iowa's director of the Department of Education, reported to the School Administrators of Iowa that students did better on math and reading tests at the 4th and 8th grade levels, but gaps remains between white students and minorities. She noted that the percent of students who scored "proficient" on 2008-09 state tests increased from the year before in every overall category except 11th-grade reading. Proficiency in mathematics at the 11th grade level only increased a fraction of a percent. When broken down by race and ethnicity, Hispanics and African-Americans eighth graders improved in reading but still lagged behind whites. In the 11th grade, reading results slipped in every racial group except Hispanics, who saw an increase. A full report will be available later this fall.

Summer Clean Up Needed

Have you cleaned out your server files? A check of the agency's server has revealed that some staff have saved an unusually large amount of files to the server and/or they have saved unusually large files, which frequently include videos and music. The server goes through a routine backup process on a nightly basis, and the backup process has begun to take increasingly longer to complete.

Dave Brousard, Director of Information Technology, wants to remind staff that the server should not be used as a place for employees to save personal files - especially personal music and video files. These files often take up many megabytes of disk space. He noted that some of the things staff members have saved may even violate copyright laws.

If your server files have mushroomed in recent years, we ask that you do some start of the school year cleaning. Please check your server files for any content you no longer might need. With the move back into the Sixth Street office, now is an excellent time to get organized.
