Katy Lee Honored as School Social Worker of the Year

We are pleased to announce that Katy Lee has been chosen as School Social Worker of the Year-2011 by the Iowa School Social Workers Association (ISSWA). She will be recognized at the Midwest Council for School Social Workers in September and will receive her award at the ISSWA Fall Conference in Des Moines on November 18th!

We are very proud that our colleague's work and dedication to children, families, schools and to the field of School Social Work, is being recognized at the state and regional level!  More details will be made available for anyone who would like to attend the awards luncheon on November 18.

Congratulations Katy!

Increased Support for Technology Integration and Digital Learning

The message sent by Governor Branstad to the State Director of Education, Jason Glass, is to do what it takes to return Iowa to first in the nation, if not in the world, in educational quality. In Glass’s report released in July, Rising to Greatness: An Imperative for Improving Iowa’s Schools, the message is clear: education in Iowa must make dramatic improvement as Iowa’s students are not where they need to be in mathematics and reading competency, putting their future at risk.  To regain Iowa’s position as a top education system in the nation, one of the pathways identified by Glass is through innovative learning environments enriched by technology.

As GWAEA continues to provide support and leadership in the area of technology integration and digital learning, we recognize the need to ensure that our staff has access to current technology and are provided with appropriate training to support our area schools.  We also recognize the need to provide more opportunities for online professional development, to increase our capacity to assist schools in identifying interventions for struggling students, and to provide support to districts as they expand their use of technology and opportunities for student online learning.

To support the increased demands in the area of digital learning and technology integration, we will be hiring a Technology Consultant to allow more support, training and assistance to our GWAEA staff.  This position will be posted on August 26. In the very near future we plan to purchase 200 new iPads to improve learning for students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  The distribution and roll-out plan for this is being developed and will be communicated when finalized, so watch for more details as they are developed.

As was stated in the budget update from Joe on August 18th, our fiscal responsibility as an agency is to have an adequate reserve and use the remaining funds to provide for staff and resources that support the work.  Staffing this position from our remaining funds is a way to ensure that staff are provided the resources to perform their work with schools and students.

Any questions regarding this can be directed to Lisa Fry at lfry@gwaea.org or Stacy Behmer at sbehmer@gwaea.org.

Contracted Staff – Timelines for Salary Lane Changes

As a reminder, additional semester hours for advancement on the salary schedule are to be secured by September 1 and evidence of the additional hours is to be submitted to the Human Resources office on or before October 1. To be sure the coursework may be used for lane change purposes, staff are advised to submit lane change application forms to your RA before registering for classes.  (These forms are available upon request from the Human Resources Office.)  Staff are also encouraged to contact the HR office (x6748) to verify the number of semester hours currently on file, or if you have questions or need additional information regarding these procedures.
