Do You HAVE to Change Your Email Password?

As you know, hacker from Taiwan was able to crack one of the user's email passwords and wreaked considerable havoc with the agency's email system over a weekend. Threats to email systems no longer come from local hackers – they can come from anywhere in the world.

In a word, YES. The days of using the name of a pet or a simple, eight-character word as a user password are fast becoming a liability. A talented hacker using one of today's fast computers can work through an eight-character password in a little over two hours. Increase the password to 14 characters, add numbers and other characters such as punctuation or any of the symbols above the number keys, and a super computer will churn for many years trying to "hack" that password.

One of the simpler ways to change your password is to identify a phrase you know and perhaps hold dear, such as, "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal…" Now, take the first letter from each word of this phrase to be the base of your password: "Whtttbsetamace" Then add in punctuation marks, numbers (such as a parent's birthday month and day, such as 08/24) and change some of the letters to capital letters, and you have a powerfully safe password. Here's an example of how the above phrase might look with this kind of coding: #08WhtTtbSE,tAM(100%)aCE24. A password of this complexity will take even a super computer many, many years to crack.

For more about safe passwords, see the following article by Terrence O'Brien:
FYI…once you have changed your password in Outlook, Outlook should remember the new password; so you won't have to spend a lot of time inputting it each day. The only time you'll need to remember this new password is when you use the agency Webmail system. Make sure you write down and save your password in a safe place!

Reminder to Wear Your Badge

When you come to the Sixth Street office, please be sure to wear your badge. We have had numerous staff members enter the building and say, "Oh, my badge is out in my car. …my house …at school. Do I really need it?" The answer is, "Yes." Everyone in the Sixth Street building should be wearing either their GWAEA badge or a visitor badge.

Individuals serving at the front desk and elsewhere in the building know a lot of our staffs' faces, but not everyone. Most of the schools we serve have instituted strict rules about visitors to their buildings wearing ID badges. We have tightened our security for the same reason – safety for our staff. Please support us in this effort.
