How to Cope with H1N1 Outbreaks

U.S. Health authorities anticipate a higher number of H1N1 flu outbreaks this year compared to last year. The individuals most at risk for catching it are children through the age of 21, because they have fewer acquired immunities to it compared to healthy adults and older individuals. Most of the county health authorities are collaborating on information being provided to the public about how to deal with any outbreaks. Below is a link to the Johnson County H1N1 update for area schools. If the health departments issue new advisory updates, we will include them in future issues of The Bulletin Board.

Blue Ribbon Recognition for Cedar Rapids School

Congratulations to Cedar Rapids Community Schools' Nixon Elementary on being identified by the U. S. Department of Education as a 2009 No Child Left Behind - Blue Ribbon School. Nixon is one of five Iowa schools achieving this designation this year.

The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools that are either academically superior or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement to high levels. The schools are selected based on one of two criteria: 1) Schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; and 2) Schools whose students, regardless of background, achieve in the top 10 percent of their state on state tests or in the case of private schools in the top 10 percent of the nation on nationally-normed tests.

Free Program on Middle School Female Bullying Offered

Parents of girls in grades 6-8 are invited to attend a free program that will teach them how to help their daughters handle difficult friendships and female bullying. "When Girls Hurt Girls: 5 Effective Ways to Guide Your Daughter Through Hurtful Friendships" is a program for adults geared toward parents. Speakers will be Blair Wagner CPCC ACC and Jane Balvanz MA RPT, both female friendship experts with A Way Through, LLC.

The free program will be from 7:00-8:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, at Coe College in Cherry Auditorium (in Peterson Hall). Through the program, adults will learn simple tips, powerful tools and practical advice on coaching girls grades 6-8 through hurtful friendships or female bullying. Specific strategies will be taught that can be implemented immediately with girls. Specifically, participants will learn:

  • What Relational Aggression is and why girls use it
  • The 5 common Friendship Weapons™ girls use against each other
  • 13 effective strategies your daughter can learn
  • To role play female bullying scenarios with your daughter
  • How to listen so your daughter will really talk

To teach your daughter to be independent and solve her own friendship problems. There will be a question and answer session. The program is for adults only and is geared toward parents. Cedar Rapids City PTA is sponsoring the program through a grant from Iowa Gender Specific Task Force.
