United Way Campaign Begins Next Week

United Way

The United Way organizations serving our areas have both kicked off their campaigns. The United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI) has officially announced the organization's new five-year community goals that focus on education, income and health. Their fund-raising goal this year is $10.35 million. The Johnson County United Way campaign has set their goal at $2.45 million.

Both campaigns will be doing more to assign dollars to charities that can most improve the quality of life in the communities served by Grant Wood AEA staff.  They are using data to define their work more than ever. And the need for our support for both campaigns is as great as it has ever been.

In 2008, we had the flood. In 2009, we had the longest downturn in the economy since the Great Depression, according (source: As a result, we have many more families who need assistance than we've had in many years. Unemployment nearly doubled in Johnson County and increased from 2.8% in 2008 to 4.8% in the first three months of this year. In Iowa as a whole, unemployment DID double, going from 3.7% in 2007 to 7.5% for the first quarter of this year.

The number of female, single-parent families living in poverty is 29.6% in Iowa and 30.2% in Johnson County. The percent of senior citizens and children living in poverty is now 14.1% in Iowa and 12.1% in Johnson County.

Pledge cards for the UWECI and Johnson County United Way campaigns will be going out to all staff next week. If you did not give last year or have never participated, please seriously consider giving. The United Way is one of the most efficient ways of giving to a wide array of charities that benefit the local communities in our area. It is our opportunity to step forward and Live United – supporting those who most need our help.

If you don't get a pledge card or you receive one for the wrong organization, please contact George Held ( in the Communications office to receive the correct pledge sheet.

November 11, 2010 - Using Gmail
December 16, 2010 - Using Google Groups

Andy Crozier, GWAEA coordinator of digital learning technology, said, “Our focus in the state with Google Apps is to make sure we create a networked group of learners who share and learn with others. We have people who are experts and people who are just beginning with Google. No matter where you are, it's outstanding that we have people from all around the state ready to support you and your district.”

"All of the webinars will be lead by Google Apps Certified Trainers,” Crozier continued. “All of our trainers are highly qualified and outstanding lead learners. It is a great opportunity for Iowa educators to learn how to use Google Apps without even leaving their classrooms.”
