Have You Written Your Legislators?

If you write to your state legislator about the Governor's proposed budget cut to the AEAs, would you please share a copy of your message with George Held in the communications office? It's spring break for many folks, but the legislature isn't taking the week off, and your messages about the importance of the work we do is urgently needed. Please take time to write on behalf of your agency.

AEA App Now Available

A new iPad/iPhone/Smart Phone app is now available that provides quick access to local district contacts, similar to what you can find in the agency’s Education Directory. It also provides an agency staff directory and driving maps for how to get to the various schools we serve. (The app may be especially valuable for incoming staff.) Iowa’s Area Education Agencies pooled resources to create this app that includes directory information for all of Iowa’s schools and AEAs.

There are two buttons at the top when searching the Apps store - iPad/ iPhone. Vistors should use the iPhone search when looking for the AEA App.

This app is free, and is available from the iTunes Store or the App Store by searching for Iowa AEA. (That search will also find the AEA Legislative Guide, which is also a free download.)
We are still working out some bugs with the app. It’s operational and ready for you to take for a test drive. If you have comments or suggestions about the app, please send them to George Held (

Severe Weather Preparations at GWAEA
Tornado Drill planned Wednesday, March 27,
at 10 a.m.

On Wednesday, March 27, at 10 a.m., the agency will have a tornado drill to prepare staff for possible severe weather situations we might have this spring.

You will hear an announcement over the speakers in the phone system throughout the building.

During a drill or during an actual tornado alert, when you hear we are under Tornado warning, please follow these steps:

  • Go immediately to the designated SAFE area closest to you.  See maps posted throughout the building and become familiar with the route suggested.

  • Do NOT go outside or try to call home.

  • Once you are in a SAFE area remain there until notified that the warning has been removed or has expired.

  • Secretaries should take their flashlights with them.

A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado to form.
A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted in the area. We will alert staff in the building only when a Warning has been issued.

GWAEA Professional Development Wants Your Feedback

If you have taken or taught one of the agency's professional development classes in the last two years, we would appreciate your feedback for the agency's PD department. Please click on the following link to participate in their department's survey:

FYI... this survey is totally confidential, and cannot be linked back to an individual participant unless you provide your name in one of the comments.

2013 Grant Wood AEA Staff Recognition & Partnerships Banquet,
Thursday, May 2

All employees with 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 years of employment with
GWAEA, retirees, and persons nominated and selected by agency staff will be honored.

The Longbranch Hotel and Convention Center, Cedar Rapids

90 Twixt Town Rd NE
Cedar Rapids

Social Hour: 5:30 p.m.
Dinner: 6:00 p.m.

GWAEA Board Members and Employees: $10

Spouses, Friends and Retired Staff: $20 per person

Reservations Due: April 19, 2013

Groups may reserve a table. Please submit all reservation requests to Cathy Nelson at Sixth Street, ext. 6544.

Click to access the banquet invitation. Printed copies are available if needed. See Cathy at the front desk. Include cash or check (payable to Grant Wood AEA).

For many years the agency's "pop fund" supported the entire cost of the banquet. Now, with no more pop money being applied to the fund, we have limited resources for the banquet. Thus, the agency's Advisory Committee agreed that a cost of $10 per staff person  would be reasonable for a nice dinner.

Retirement Potluck

Please join us for a retirement potluck for Mary Cummings on Wednesday, March 27 between 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in the Staff Conference Room.  Bring your own table service and a dish to pass.

STAR Autism Program Training

4/08/2013 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
04/09/2013 8:30 AM-3:30 PM
05/14/2013 5:00 PM-8:00 PM

The STAR Autism Program teaches children with autism the critical skills identified by the 2001 National Research Council. The ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) instructional methods of discrete trial training, pivotal response training and functional routines form the instructional base of this comprehensive program for children with autism.

Participants will learn the techniques of discrete trial training, pivotal response training and teaching functional routines. They will receive examples of the STAR Autism program lesson plans at each instructional level in order to practice their skills in implementing the program. The course content will include the following: An overview of the three instructional methods (discrete trial, pivotal response training and functional routines) and how they are used in combination to form the STAR Autism Program. A comprehensive how to training on the use of discrete trial training. An introduction on how to implement pivotal response training.

The STAR Autism Program has been used to provide intensive instruction in critical skills for children with autism in both self-contained programs and inclusive education programs. The program provides a structure that allows teachers to implement instruction throughout the child's day through typical school routines and provides techniques to teach the child in short 1:1 instructional sessions. The skills the child learns in the 1:1 instruction can be immediately practiced in the natural environment through the functional routines lessons.

This course will be presented by staff from STAR Autism Support.
