We Are Down to The Wire! Please write today…

The state legislature will be making decisions in the next couple of weeks regarding funding for the AEAs. Please take 10 minutes today to compose and send a message to your legislators. If you don't know who they are, contact the Communications Office.

As an AEA employee, you know how important your work is. Tell them what you do. If they truly understand your work, we believe it will influence how they vote.


The Standards Based Grading Conference will feature live streaming of keynote speaker Shawn Cornally's presentation on Wednesday, April 24, 9:00-9:30 a.m. Access the link to the live streaming presentation at or click on the link via the above graphic or from the same graphic that appears on the GWAEA homepage.


If your schedule won't permit you to view the presentation live, this session will be recorded and posted as a video available on the agency's EduVision site.


The conference is planned on April 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the conference center with more than 200 participants registered. Agency parking will be impacted on this day.

You’re Invited to an IPERS and RIC 403(b) Program – Educational Workshop

IPERS and the Retirement Investors Club (RIC) are scheduled to give a retirement plan workshop on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Kirkwood Community College, Iowa Hall, 3rd Floor, Iowa Rooms A-D, from 4:15 – 6:00 pm.  IPERS and RIC retirement plan educators will provide an overview of the IPERS and RIC 403b plan benefits.  Grant Wood AEA employees are invited to attend.

April 2013 Edition of AEA Impacting Lives Update

All of Iowa’s AEAs have received letters of support from parents who are grateful for the services their children have been provided by AEA staff. For this month’s Impacting Lives update at, we are sharing some letters we’ve received. Thank you to all who have shown support to the AEA system. We are truly honored to provide the services that impact so many students’ lives in Iowa.

Referrals to the GWAEA Brain Injury Resource Team

Members of Grant Wood AEA’s Brain Injury Resource Team (BIRT) collaborate with AEA and LEA teams to provide consultation for children who have sustained a brain injury, their families and local school personnel.


Referral forms can be sent to Amy Cameron, GWAEA executive assistant at or by calling ext. 6801.


Your Life Iowa

Your Life Iowa is an anti-bullying and suicide prevention service for the state of Iowa comprised of three features; a 24/7 hotline, texting services, and website. Your Life Iowa is funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health and is provided by Boys Town.


The Your Life Iowa hotline is a resource for students, parents, educators, counselors and other professionals who are dealing with bullying issues. The hotline features trained counselors who can offer strategies and resources to assist those targeted by bullying and those who engage in bullying behavior. The Hotline is available 24/7.

Your Life Iowa also offers a texting service from 4-8 p.m., seven days a week.

For many years the agency's "pop fund" supported the entire cost of the banquet. Now, with no more pop money being applied to the fund, we have limited resources for the banquet. Thus, the agency's Advisory Committee agreed that a cost of $10 per staff person  would be reasonable for a nice dinner.

Grant Wood AEA is a leader in the state with iPad utilization to support student achievement. We are collecting a list of iPad Apps from AEAs statewide and will be sharing these Apps and resources by content area/discipline. Information will be shared about what apps are being used and how they are being used.

Professional Development Announcements – April 2013


Added Days Available for June Professional Development:

Assessment for English Language Learners
This workshop will focus on considerations for evaluation of English Language Learners in an effort to build capacity for GWAEA building staff involved in the assessment and identification process.

June 17, 2013 8:30 – 3:30
Eligible staff may be paid through added days.  This includes CONTRACTED staff who managers believe would benefit from the training. Proposed audience:  Consultants, Speech Language Pathologists, Social Workers, School Psychologists.

Staff must register for the session(s) via our Professional Development website (GWAEA Staff Training) by 6 am on May 15, 2013. Professional Development will notify Amy Cameron of registrants who will be included in the added days requests to be approved at the Board meeting. Due to this special process, managers do not need to submit an added days request.

Once added days are Board approved, staff will receive an added days calendar and time card. These are delivered to staff region inboxes. Staff should make special arrangements with their secretary if the added days paperwork is to be sent elsewhere.
Staff should attach a copy of their professional development certificate of attendance along with their completed time card.

Investigating the Standards Overview for GWAEA Staff: Iowa Core English Language Arts K-12

This overview of the structure of the Iowa Core for ELA will use State-developed Iowa Core Investigation professional development materials. The structure of the Iowa Core ELA and K-12 College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards will be studied.

iPadU: Slide to Unlock Learning

Grant Wood AEA will be hosting a conference to celebrate and expand upon innovative classroom integration strategies for the iPad. Join us for two days for workshops that will guarantee exciting, hands-on learning experiences that you can use to enhance teaching and learning in a K-12 classroom. This WILL BE offered for recertification credit! This is a change, check back next week to register as it is being added to the system!

Evaluator Approval Information

Professional Administrator Licenses require approved Evaluator Approval coursework as a part of the licenses renewal credits.  The course options include Assessing Academic Rigor and iEvaluate. A letter from the DE/BOEE is attached for additional information. Please contact the PD office if you have further questions.
