All Agency Meeting on Monday, August 13

Mark your calendar to attend the all staff meeting on Monday, August 13 from 8:00-11:30 a.m. This year’s event will be held at the Prairie High School performing arts auditorium, just as it has the last two years.

Guest presenter this year will be Troyce Fisher. Fisher has served in many educational roles. She was head of the School Administrators of Iowa, and also worked in one of Iowa’s Area Education Agencies. Most recently, she has been working on an initiative to support school administrators who seek to increase their districts’ effectiveness through innovations in instructional methodology, Iowa Future.

New this year will be additional tables for staff to visit during the reconnecting time from 8:00 to 8:55 a.m. – vendors and key charities will staff tables in the lobby where they can answer questions and provide handouts and/or literature. The companies and organizations that will be represented are:

·         Grant Wood Education Association
·         Linn Area Credit Union
·         Hills Bank
·         Sam’s Club
·         Costco
·         United Way
·         Community Health Charities Iowa
·         Iowa Shares

The next issue of The Bulletin Board will publish on August 3.

First Responders training planned

Training for agency first responders is planned on Oct. 2. The first responders are GWAEA employees trained to be contacts in situations of medical emergencies or sudden severe illness of employees or visitors on Agency property.

Staff interested in becoming a GWAEA first responder or would like additional information about the upcoming training should contact George Held, ext. 6714.

Recycling with Rick

Did you know every year Americans discard 1.6 million pens? Placed end to end they would stretch 151 miles. Let’s do our part to recycle unwanted pens and pencils from home and office.

recycle

Pen and Pencil Donation boxes are in both break rooms at Grant Wood AEA Sixth Street facility and one in the Southern facility. Any brand and any size pens, pencils, mechanical pencils, wooden pencils, markers and highlighters, sharpie and dry eraser markers are accepted. No crayons, please.

We will partner with Terracycle to keep these items out of the landfill. Terracycle creates national recycling systems for previously non-recyclable or hard-to-recycle waste. The company then converts the collected waste into a wide variety of products and materials.

GWAEA Team - Especially for You® Race Against Breast Cancer

The 22nd annual Especially for You® Race Against Breast Cancer will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2012. The race begins at 8:00 a.m.  This event, co-founded by Mercy Medical Center and General Mills, is held each year to help increase awareness regarding the importance of early detection and screening for breast cancer.

especiallyforyourace

ALL PROCEEDS from the race are used locally to provide breast cancer screening and other support services for individuals in need.

We will once again recruit a Grant Wood Area Education Agency team.  Each participant will pay for their registration fee.  Registering as part of the GWAEA team does not mean you have to walk together as a group.  Your individual race packet(s) will be available for pick-up at the GWAEA Sixth Street or GWAEA Southern Facility.  You have the option to add a GWAEA logo to the back of the t-shirt.

This year’s race will begin on 10th Street SE instead of 8th Street.  The shirts are lime green. There is a 5K run for females and males, a 5K walk for females and males, or a 1-mile Family Fun Walk. Registration fee is $25 or $20 Youth (15 & under).

To register as part of the GWAEA team, we will need to receive your registration forms and registration fee by Wednesday, August 29.  For registration forms and/or additional information, please contact Kim Martin , Stacy Murphy, Karen Desmarais, or Elizabeth Steffensmeier.
