Improvements to Hangouts Chat in Gmail

Google Hangouts chat users will start seeing an updated UI in their conversation list in Hangouts in Gmail. Status markers are shown as green bubbles and the displayed contacts are in order of most recent chats. Other features include recent conversation snippets and a new contact search button.

When you start a Hangout with someone on your computer, you can look at the person's profile picture in your Hangouts list to see whether they're online and available or not.

Contacts who are available

  • Hangouts: If someone is available on Hangouts on their computer, their profile picture will show a green circle on it. These people will be notified about new messages or video call invitations immediately.

  • Google Chat, Google Talk, or a third-party chat app: The Chat list will show people who are available with a green dot next to their name.

Contacts who aren’t available

  • Hangouts: If someone is not available in Hangouts on their computer, their profile picture won’t show a green circle on it. These people could be on a mobile device, have snooze notifications enabled, are idle on their computer, or aren’t signed in to Hangouts. They will be notified about messages and video call invites, but they may not see it immediately.

  • Google Chat, Google Talk, or a third-party chat app: The Chat list will show people who aren’t available with a gray dot next to their name. People who are idle will have an orange dot next to their name.

iPad Feedback Needed

We would still like feedback as we plan for the future. Please take five minutes to complete a short survey to provide information on apps, usage and future professional development planning. The survey can be found on our GWAEA iPad site. You must be logged into your GWAEA Google Account to complete the survey.

iPad App Orders- App Order Form Open!

We are opening the Agency iPad App Order for paid iPad apps from May 8th-May 18th. Please be sure to select no more than 7 apps, be responsible and only order apps you will need, we will be placing another order in the fall. The Tier 2 apps we will have on devices in the SDC this summer/fall for you to check out and try and then you may contact us for us to purchase it for you. You must be signed in with your GWAEA Google Account in order to view and fill out the form. Link to the form

In order to get your apps please make sure these steps are completed!

We are transitioning into distributing agency purchased apps in a new and more efficient way. In order to receive agency purchased apps from this point forward, you must add your device to the Meraki system and authorize an Apple ID for us to send the apps to (the nice thing is it can be your personal Apple ID, so less to remember).

In preparation for our next agency app order you will have to complete the two steps from your iPad or you will be unable to receive agency purchased apps.

Step 1:

Install the Meraki MDM Profile on your device - iPad Air users did this when they picked up their new devices. Everyone else can follow the instructions below:

Step 2:Authorize Meraki to install apps - You will receive an email from a CISCO Meraki email address and must tap the link in the email and authorize an Apple ID for agency apps to be assigned. This can be your personal Apple ID if you would like or one you create.

Fill out this form to have the authorization email sent to you, then follow the directions in the video below to authorize your Apple ID.

If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact
Behmer ( or Jonathan Wylie ( for more information.
