6th St. Railroad Crossing Closed for Repair, Aug. 12-17, 2013

We have been notified the CRANDIC railroad crossing on 6th Street will be replaced the week of August 12-17. That means 6th Street will be closed while that repair occurs.

Staff coming from the north will need to  take I-380 to Highway 30, exit onto 6th and go north or they can take 33rd Avenue east to J St., south to Hawkeye Downs Road, then west on Hawkeye Downs Road to the back entrance of the agency's parking lot.

Attention GWAEA Staff Who Serve Any Cedar Rapids Community District School

Grant Wood AEA makes daily deliveries to and pickups from the Cedar Rapids warehouse. Once materials are delivered to the Cedar Rapids warehouse, their staff sort and deliver to the Cedar Rapids schools.

Effective July 1, 2013, Cedar Rapids changed delivery and pick up services to their schools. Delivery to Cedar Rapids schools from the Cedar Rapids warehouse will follow an alternating 2 week schedule. For example, east side facilities will have delivery Monday, Wednesday, Friday one week and Tuesday and Thursday the following week.

Even though there will be no change in the frequency that Grant Wood AEA vans will deliver mail, materials and equipment to the Cedar Rapids warehouse, staff may experience a delay in getting materials. If you need to receive equipment or materials from the SDC or Media Center on a short time frame, consider picking up your order at the 6th Street Facility.

Seeking members to state special education panel

The Iowa Department of Education is seeking members to join the Iowa Special Education Advisory Panel, known as SEAP.

SEAP should represent all Iowans, including those who are culturally and linguistically diverse. We especially are seeking people with the following attributes:

·         Those who have a particular passion for the education of students with disabilities;
·         A person responsible for services to students who are homeless; and
·         A representative from the state child welfare responsible for foster care.
The majority of the panel must be parents of children with disabilities or individuals with disabilities.

SEAP meets in Des Moines about six to seven times a year; there is no compensation, but expenses including hotel, meals, mileage and child-care costs are covered. New members are required to attend a Sept. 12 orientation. The dates of the full SEAP meetings are: Sept. 13, Oct. 18, Dec. 6, Jan. 17, Feb. 28, April 4, and May 30.

If you or someone you know is interested, fill out the attached application and return it by Aug. 5 to Jim Flansburg at jim.flansburg@iowa.gov.

Iowa’s AEAs Launch Statewide Pinterest Site

Iowa’s Area Education Agencies (AEAs) are pleased to announce the launch of a statewide Pinterest site, http://pinterest.com/iowaaea/

The Iowa’s AEAs Pinterest site is a collaborative project of Iowa’s nine AEAs. The site is maintained by AEA consultants from all over the state who specialize in different curriculum and instructional areas.

iowaaeapinterest

The over 35 pinning boards provide a visual, dynamic forum which informs parents, educators and school administrators about AEA programs and resources, as well as other quality, credible ideas and resources relating to education.

Items posted to the site are reviewed by AEA staff with the intention of providing participants with quality ideas that can be used in the classroom and beyond.

If you would like to contribute to this site, contact the George Held or Valerie Taylor Hill in the GWAEA Communications Office.

Need to Restock Your Office Space?

A variety of used office supplies will be available in the Benton Room (2nd floor of the Sixth Street office) on August 12-15.

These are items that others have decided they no longer need, but they might fit other individuals’ needs perfectly!

recycle

Rather than throw them away or into a recycle bin, we thought it would be a better idea to have these items available for staff to take a look and see if there aren’t some used office supplies they need. Come see for yourself in mid-August. Any items left over will be recycled on Friday, August 16, 2013.

RTI is a way of thinking about how educators can ensure each child receives the time and support needed to achieve success. For RTI to be effective, work must be shared among collaborative teacher teams and schoolwide teams. Together, the entire school assumes responsibility for the learning of every student. This workshop will help AEA staff understand RTI and how they can support schools in this process.
