Reminder: 6th St. Railroad Crossing Closed for Repair
Aug. 12-17, 2013

We have been notified the CRANDIC railroad crossing on 6th Street will be replaced the week of August 12-17. That means 6th Street will be closed while that repair occurs. 

Staff coming from the north will need to  take I-380 to Highway 30, exit onto 6th and go north or they can take 33rd Avenue east to J St., south to Hawkeye Downs Road, then west on Hawkeye Downs Road to the back entrance of the agency's parking lot.  


Gov. Branstad names Dr. Brad Buck as new
Iowa Department of Education director

Gov. Terry E. Branstad named Dr. Brad Buck, 44, to be the next Iowa Department of Education director, calling him a visionary leader with the right skills to implement the landmark education reform package passed by the 2013 Legislature.

Buck has served as superintendent of the 1,300-student Saydel school district in rural Polk County since July 2011. He previously worked as a school administrator in the Waukee, Hudson and North Mahaska school districts from 1997 to 2011. Buck began his education career in 1992 as a science teacher at Parkview Middle School in Ankeny.  He is also a past president of School Administrators of Iowa.

Online jobs board for education announced

On Aug. 5, Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa Department of Education Interim Director D.T. Magee introduced TeachIowa.gov, a new statewide education job posting system.

 

TeachIowa.gov simplifies the search for education jobs and employees, expands the pool of job candidates

statewide, and reduces costs for school districts, area education agencies and taxpayers.TeachIowa.gov is part of the Teach Iowa Initiative, a component of the new education reform law that aims to attract top talent into the teaching pipeline.The system is managed by the Iowa Department of Education and the Board of Educational Examiners.

 

Hundreds of job openings at school districts and AEAs have been posted to TeachIowa.gov so far. The new education reform law requires public schools and AEAs to post all job vacancies to the system. The system is optional for nonpublic schools.

The new SCALE-UP classroom welcomed a professional development class on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

 

Grant Wood AEA's SCALE-UP classroom (Student-Centered Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies), is housed in the Staff Conference Room of the Sixth St. facility. The classroom provides a space where teachers, administrators, and agency employees can experience, learn, and experiment with pedagogies in a student centered, creative and collaborative learning environment.

 

The classroom was designed by GWAEA Media and Technology team based on the National Education Technology Plan and research around Response to Intervention and Personalized Learning. The furniture and technologies selected were chosen to model developing trends in educational technology and furnishings. The model classroom. RTI is a way of thinking about how educators can ensure each child receives the time and support needed to achieve success. For RTI to be effective, work must be shared among collaborative teacher teams and schoolwide teams. Together, the entire school assumes responsibility for the learning of every student. This workshop will help AEA staff understand RTI and how they can support schools in this process.

This professional learning session will provide participants overview skills to implement the data team model which will provide school teams skills to analyze current student performance, select high leverage instructional practices, create a plan of action and monitor the plan of action.

Professional Administrator Licenses require approved Evaluator Approval coursework as a part of the licenses renewal credits.  The course options include Assessing Academic Rigor and iEvaluate.
