Grant Wood AEA Parent/Student Transition Night

Your Child's Future...the Possibilities are Endless

Members of Grant Wood AEA's Transition Cadre are busy organizing the 2015 Parent/Student Transition Night, planned on Thursday, April 30, in the Conference Center of the Sixth St. Facility.


As students with disabilities approach adulthood, their parents often have many questions about what the future holds for their child.

Parents and students will gain information about independent living, life after high school, college requirements and assistance available for young people. Breakout sessions and booths are included with helpful information about living, learning and working in the area. Presenters will include employers, representatives from support services.


The keynote speaker will be Jackie Kuntz, who currently works as a support provider for people with disabilities as well as a fitness instructor. Jackie has had Tourette syndrome (TS) since the age of six, however, it took until she was 22 years old to be correctly diagnosed with the disorder. While life has certainly not been easy, Jackie has reached many goals in her life and strives to help others do the same. She is passionate about helping people overcome adversity and find joy in life through humor and perseverance.

New GWAEA Blog Launches

While the Grant Wood AEA executive cabinet regularly drops into discipline groups and regional staff meetings, it can be hard to visit with our staff who are itinerant or are otherwise out supporting our schools.


We have launched a new blog to allow the executive cabinet to connect with employees and the public about things happening with our agency. Check back frequently as we communicate with you about things that are on our minds and as we celebrate our contributions in the community.

Remote Work Site Program (2015-16) Applications Due by May 1

This program is available for eligible Contracted and Salaried staff who are based in any of the Agency Centers (6th St, 33rd Ave and Coralville).
Details about this program, including a program overview and employee application form, are attached for your information and reference. Please note:
1)       Eligibility for the program will be determined on an individual basis at the supervisor’s discretion.  Employees are to submit an annual application to participate in the program and supervisors will determine if such an arrangement is appropriate for an employee using criteria that are outlined in the overview.
2)       Dedicated work space in an Agency Center will not be provided for employees who participate in the RWS program, however participating employees will have access to Agency facilities including temporary work space.
3)       The program is not available for hourly employees (due to the legal requirements for monitoring the work time of hourly staff).
4)       Employees must apply for program participation each year.  Completed application forms are to be submitted to the supervisor by May 1 for the upcoming work year.  
5)       Clear guidelines and requirements related to employee schedules, work hours, Agency resources, safety, security and liability are provided in the overview document.
If there are questions or more information is needed regarding this program, employees may contact their supervisor or the Human Resources Office. This program is available to help ensure effective and efficient Agency services and a productive work environment for Agency staff. This program will be reviewed on an ongoing basis and changes may be made as needed. Employees are invited to provide feedback about what’s working well with the program and/or suggestions for improvement. Feedback may be submitted to the Human Resources Office.

Health, Dental and Vision Insurance Elections Due May 13

Each year, employees have the opportunity to make changes to their health, dental and vision insurance elections.  Informational materials have been provided to all employees to review.  If you want to make changes, the application process must be completed by May 13, 2015 with the effective date of the change as July 1, 2015.


If nothing is submitted by the May 13 deadline, it will be understood you wish to remain with your current insurance elections.

Margaret's background includes positions as a librarian associate and substitute teacher with the Saydel Community School District, 2010-2014; a substitute teacher for Dowling and the West Des Moines Community School District; and a substitute teacher, teacher assistant and librarian para-pro with School District U-46, Elgin, Ill., 1997-2008.


Now's The Time!

It’s time for a little spring cleaning! Our agency is preparing for a refresh, and we have drafted guidelines to aid staff with this process. Staff should reference these tools to ensure consistency with what we discard/recycle, and how to organize our materials going forward.


Timeline for Cleaning

April/May - Continue to purge excess files and materials. Coralville office continues to pack.

June - June 12th is the last day of packing for Coralville staff. Coralville office furniture will move in/set up through the week of June 22nd - June 30th.


Any loose or boxed items that are unmarked and stacked or stowed in any location other than inside a filing or storage cabinet in each Agency facility after June 15th will be removed from the facility and discarded.

Grant Wood AEA Literacy Intervention Fair planned May 11

This workshop is designed to provide participants the chance to view and interact with reading intervention materials for struggling readers. Publishing companies will each have a booth to display their materials. They will also each provide a 30-45 minute presentation highlighting the target for the interventions, how data is gathered and monitored, and research based results.

Professional Administrator Licenses require approved Evaluator Approval coursework as a part of the licenses renewal credits.  The course options include Assessing Academic Rigor and iEvaluate.A letter from the DE/BOEE is attached for additional information.
