Know the Lingo: 50 Educational Acronyms for GWAEA Staff

Regardless of your tenure at Grant Wood AEA, you likely have heard a term in your daily work activities that was unfamiliar. This year we’ll take a little time each week to remind our long term staff about the definitions of some of our acronyms, and help our new staff members learn a new language:

1- GWAEA – This seems obvious, but let’s start at the beginning. Grant Wood Area Education Agency is one of nine Iowa area education agencies (AEAs) established by the Iowa Legislature in 1975 to provide equity in educational programs across the state. GWAEA covers seven counties (Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn, Washington) and 4,900 square miles. You likely know that the agency’s name pays homage to the famous artist who is from the area, and the names of conference rooms at the Sixth Street location are named for his paintings.

2- LEA- staff also might hear the term LEA, which means Local Educational Agencies.  LEA is a commonly used synonym for a school district.

3 - FAST/TIER – During our all agency meeting last month, we discussed FAST/TIER as it related to our LEAs.  FAST stands for Formative Assessment System for Teachers and is a reading assessment for students and focuses on phonological awareness, sounds, words, text reading and reading behaviors.  TIER is a statewide data system that tracks data from FAST including universal screening, intervention, and progress monitoring data for every student in the state.

A list of educational acronyms is posted on the Grant Wood AEA website. More to come...

facebook logoFacebook "Throwback Thursdays" to celebrate 40 years of
Grant Wood AEA and Iowa's AEAs

Iowa’s Area Education Agency (AEA) system turns 40 this year, and there is much to celebrate! During the 25th anniversary year of 2000, Grant Wood AEA posted a historical timeline in each of the agency's facilities. What once was a three-dimensional timeline is now moving and expanding to become a Facebook album.

GWAEA 6th Street Location Blood Drive Oct. 24

Use one hour of your day to save up to three lives!  Grant Wood AEA will host a blood drive at the Sixth Street location Friday, Oct. 24.  Save the date, and watch for information next week on how you can schedule an appointment to make a donation.  (Special note: staff who have donated at GWAEA blood drives in the past may have erroneously received a postcard indicating that the drive at our location is Nov. 12.  These were sent in error by the blood drive coordinator. Please disregard information regarding the Nov. 12 drive.)

iPad App Orders - App Order Form Opens Friday, Aug. 29

We are opening the Agency iPad App Order for paid iPad apps on Aug. 29. Please be sure to select no more than seven apps, be responsible and only order apps you will need. The order form will close on September 8 at 5 p.m.

You must be signed in with your GWAEA Google Account in order to view and fill out the form.

In order to get your apps, please make sure these steps are completed.

We are transitioning into distributing agency purchased apps in a new and more efficient way. In order to receive agency purchased apps from this point forward, you must add your device to the Meraki system and authorize an Apple ID for us to send the apps to. (The nice thing is it can be your personal Apple ID, so less to remember).

In preparation for our next agency app order you will have to complete the two steps from your iPad or you will be unable to receive agency purchased apps.

Step 1: Install the Meraki MDM Profile on your device - iPad Air users did this when they picked up their new devices. Everyone else can follow the instructions below:

Step 2: Authorize Meraki to install apps - You will receive an email from a CISCO Meraki email address and must tap the link in the email and authorize an Apple ID for agency apps to be assigned. This can be your personal Apple ID if you would like or one you create.

Fill out this form to have the authorization email sent to you, then follow the directions in the video below to authorize your Apple ID.

If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to contact Stacy Behmer (sbehmer@gwaea.org) or Jonathan Wylie (jwylie@gwaea.org) for more information.
