Facilities Update: Remodeling Anticipated for 33rd Ave. Facility

At a special meeting in March our Board of Directors accepted an offer on the former Southern Facility building located on Holiday Road in Coralville. The closing of the sale is tentatively scheduled for June 2016.

“Selling commercial real estate takes time, and our patience has paid off with a very competitive offer for our former facility,” said Chief Administrator Joe Crozier. “As we have discussed over the past few years, the sale of this building will help us fund additional facilities projects like the second phase of remodeling our 33rd Avenue facility.”

The first phase of updating our 33rd Avenue facility began in September, 2014, which mainly concentrated on work on the first floor. “The remodeling work was top to bottom with new walls and floors, the addition of a much-needed loading dock to support the increased work from our

VAST team, and a new VAST training classroom on the first floor,” said Facilities Lead Dave Brousard. The work in phase one also included improvements to the front walkways to ensure the facility is ADA accessible, improvements to the fire protection systems in the building, and upgrades the heating, cooling and filtration systems.

The full scope of the second phase of the remodel effort is being finalized now, but will likely focus on improving the classrooms, break areas and other work spaces on the second level of the building. At this time staff can anticipate that construction will kick off during the 2016-2017 school year.

“This is a significant investment for our agency,” said Joe, “and one that we're not undertaking without thoughtful consideration. But each year our staff comments in our Top Workplaces survey validate the importance of their work environment, and we're excited to be in a position to begin moving forward with this next phase of our remodeling effort.”

Staff will have an opportunity to learn more about the details of the remodel and the accommodations needed to support our staff based at the 33rd Ave facility through emails and Bulletin Board articles over the next several months.

Coming Soon: Grant Wood AEA Gardens!

There is a wonderful area on the north side of the Sixth St. building where the new sidewalk for walking is located, and we have been approved to use a patch for a flower garden! Our area has shade and sun so we will be able to use all different kinds of plants. What we would like is to have staff bring in a plant from their own flower garden (if you have ones that need splitting) and then take some time after work one day and plant, water and mulch. If you would be interested in bringing in something to beautify our garden or would like to plant, email Stacy Murphy, Stmurphy@gwaea.org or call ext. 6888. We will plant the week of May 16 or 23, depending on individual schedules and the weather. Thank you!

Celebrations!

A reception on April 29, 2016 celebrated retiring GWAEA speech-language pathologists (l to r) Debbie Mills, Sheila Matheson, Anne Steffensmeier, and Helen Nagel. Their celebration included a gameshow Q&A, "Name That SLP," featuring a glimpse of their past GWAEA activities and highlighting future plans. Congratulations!

Leading Groups: Effective Strategies for Building Professional Community

Instructor: Bruce Wellman

Group leaders wear many hats at once as they bring positional responsibility, technical knowledge and information to meetings and work sessions. Mindful leaders perform a delicate balancing act by knowing when and how to assert themselves with their groups and when and how to integrate themselves with their groups. Skillful leaders are able to manage three simultaneous agendas with and for their groups; task focus; process skill development; and relational development.

See flyer for details

These sessions explore a leadership repertoire that flexes between the stances of presenting, collaborating and facilitating when communicating important information and to support groups in generating and processing information. Knowing when and how to flex between these stances allows skilled leaders to productively and confidently influence positive outcomes for groups and manage difficult topics and conversations. Flexibility in stance also allows the group leader to preserve a place at the table so his or her voice as a colleague has a space for participation.
