Gov. Branstad names Ryan Wise Education Director

Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad on Tuesday named Iowa Department of Education Deputy Director Ryan Wise the new director of the department. Wise, 39, will take the position on July 1, as current director Brad Buck transitions to a new position as superintendent of the Cedar Rapids Community School District.

Wise has served as deputy director at the Iowa Department of Education since September 2013. He has led the implementation of Iowa’s Teacher Leadership and Compensation System (TLC), including designing and executing the application and selection process, facilitating multiple statewide coordination teams, creating a principal support system and leading Iowa’s Commission on Educator Leadership and Compensation. In addition, Wise has served as the liaison between the Department and the Iowa State Board of Education, and has been the representative on the Iowa High School Athletic Association board of control and on the Governor’s Council for National Service.  He is also the administrator for the Department’s Division of Policy and Communications.

Thank You

Words cannot express our thanks for everyone’s kindness during the passing of our Mom, Mother-in-law.  The memorial, the kind words, the hugs, the laughs, the prayers, the thoughts, the food, the memory gifts, coming to Mom’s services, and the list goes on.  We just want to say THANK YOU.  She was one of a kind.

Live Longer, Better

Blue Zones Communities® are Creating a Better Life Now

(adapted from Momentum: news and information from the Healthiest State Initiative, July 2015)

A community's environmental factors can greatly impact its residents' healthy behaviors. Research shows that up to 70 percent of an individual's health is influenced by behavior. But behaviors need to change, and communities need to work to make well-being a way of life.

Much like the rest of the nation, Iowa's obesity and chronic disease rates are increasing. Today, 32 percent of Iowans are obese, and Iowa is ranked the 9th most obese state according to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index®.

In 2011, Blue Zones Project® was launched. It's aimed at making Iowa communities healthier through incremental changes to the built environment. Read more »
