Furniture Giveaway

On Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 1 - 4 p.m., furniture at the old Southern Facility on 200 Holiday Rd. in Coralville will be offered to Grant Wood AEA staff. You are free to take to your district school building for professional use. Once the furniture enters your district building it becomes the property of that building.

On Thursday, Aug. 13, from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m., furniture will be offered to any of our schools in AEA 10. An email will be going out to superintendents and building principals.

If there is still furniture available after these two giveaways, it's possible there may be a giveaway to the general public at which time GWAEA staff may take items to use in your home office.

For more information, please contact Dave Brousard, 319-399-6795, or dbrousard@gwaea.org.

Plan to Attend All-Agency Inservice, Aug. 17, 2015

Registration from 8:00-8:55 a.m.; Inservice begins at 9 a.m.

Each year, GWAEA staff gather at the All-Agency Inservice to welcome back those who have had the summer off, and take time to catch up with staff who have been working throughout the past few months on services and projects.

gwaea

This year’s All-Agency Inservice will be Monday, August 17, at 9 a.m. in the Concert Hall at College Community. (map) Staff should plan to arrive between 8:00 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. in the Concert Hall foyer for registration and an opportunity to visit with your colleagues. The annual meeting will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. While the All-Agency Inservice will wrap up before lunch, staff should plan to attend regional meetings in the afternoon.

Staff will receive letters and a map to their home address with directions to available parking areas at College Community on the day of the inservice. The map notes two areas as no parking areas:

- the parking lot north of the football field will be blocked off for band camp activities

- no parking on the road/grass that curves on the west side of the Concert Hall

Staff should follow up with their supervisors for additional information on the day’s activities.
We look forward to welcoming you back on Aug. 17.

Thursday, Aug. 20 and Friday, Aug. 21, 2015

After great response last year, we will again kick off the year with two days of technology PD days for GWAEA agency staff! The goal of these two days is to provide staff opportunities to learn some new skills and ask questions about some of the tools being used throughout the agency. There will be some one hour and some two hour workshops along with informal round table sharing of iPad Apps at scheduled times. Throughout the two days feel free to drop in during help desk times to get individual questions answered by our digital learning team! Make sure you to preregister for the workshops. Please go to the GWAEA Professional Development website and click on GWAEA Staff Training to register. Space is limited! Additional workshops on technology integration will be offered throughout the school year and open to LEA and AEA staff. Feel free to come by and check out the new digital learning and makerspace area in the media center!

Mindfulness 101:  Stress Reduction and Wellness

This nine-week opportunity is supported through the agency's GROW Committee. The class is designed to help you cultivate your inner resources through mindfulness meditation practices to respond more skillfully to stress and find greater ease and peace of mind.

grow_gwaea

Research suggests that mindfulness practice can positively affect stress resilience, physical and mental health, interpersonal skills, academic skills and promote overall well-being.

This class is based on a model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinnm, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and will be led by GWAEA retiree Christine Allen as the instructor. This model has been used with diverse groups around the world including corporate employees, CEOs, educators, students, attorneys, judges, prison inmates, health care professionals, teachers and professional atheletes.

Christine has practiced mindfulness meditation for many years, received training in MBSR for health care professionals from Jon Kabat-Zinn, Saki Santorelli and staff at the Center for Mindfulness, and has attended several extended mindfulness meditation retreats. She has taught Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction courses at University Hospitals and Clinics since 2004 and helped develop and teach a credit course on mindfulness meditation for undergraduates at The University of Iowa for several years.
