GWAEA VAST Center Science Units Replenishment Process

Grant Wood AEA PRIDE

Congratulations to GWAEA staff with the Van Allen Science Teaching Center (VAST) for completing a turn around of 1,537 first through fifth-grade science units during Feb. 14 - March 14, 2018. (Kindergarten and middle school units aren't a part of the quick turnaround replenishment and redistribution process.)

Grant Wood AEA Van Allen Science Teaching Center (VAST) science units.

These 1,537 units include not only Grant Wood AEA, but also science units for Keystone AEA, Mississippi Bend AEA, and Great Prairie AEA.

Kathy Schultz, GWAEA curriculum consultant - science assigned to the VAST Center, and
Mary Zobeck, GWAEA science center assistant, explained that the total number of totes that are distributed during this time is 6,192. This includes science units for GWAEA plus our three partners.

In addition to the VAST Center full-time staff,10 temp staff have been hired during this replenishment and redistribution time and it is anticipated they will work an ADDITIONAL 1,120 hours for the
VAST Center.

Congratulations!

Happier Hour - every Thursday, October through April, from 5 to 8 p.m. These weekly events will focus on health and well-being and will follow the Blue Zones Project™ and the Power 9® principles. Let's Celebrate the Arrival of Spring with a Wellness Challenge!

To participate, all you do is complete one wellness activity for 15 days (Mon-Fri) from 3/19 through 4/6. The activity choices are based on four of the categories of the Blue Zones® healthy lifestyle habits: (A) Move Naturally, (B) Right Outlook, (C) Eat Wisely, (D) Belong.

You record your daily wellness activity on the Wellness Tracker. Copies are available at the front desk in each GWAEA building or print a copy of the Wellness Tracker.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Mark is Brain Injury Awareness Month

The Grant Wood AEA Brain Injury Resource Team (BIRT) collaborates with AEA teams, LEA teams and families in order to provide consultation and resources for children who have sustained a recent brain injury (such as an accident or concussion) or trauma to the brain in the past (seizure disorder, syndromes, etc).

Did you know?

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) signed off on the use of a first-of-its-kind blood test to detect traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adults. Banyan Biomarkers’ Banyan Brain Trauma Indicator (BTI), approved February 14, 2018, works by identifying and measuring the levels of two brain-specific proteins that appear in the blood within 12 hours of a brain injury. The test results are available within three to four hours.

*This screen does not RULE OUT concussion. Concussion symptoms will still need to be monitored and protocols followed.

Shred Bins vs. Recycle Bins

recycle bins

Shred bins are for confidential information only. Books, magazines, anything that does not contain sensitive information should go in the recycle bins as they are much cheaper for us to dispose.

The difference between the shredding and recycling bins is the shredding has the locks on them.

Thanks,

Dave Brousard
