Iowa School Board Recognition Month, May 2018
“We Believe in Public Education”

May is annually designated School Board Recognition Month by the Iowa Association of School Boards in recognition of the dedicated service of Iowa's nearly 2,000 volunteer school board members.

Grant Wood AEA is governed by a nine-member board of directors elected by area school boards. Board members represent designated segments of the agency’s service area called director districts. They are elected for four-year rotating terms by the school district board members in their director districts. The board is responsible for approving AEA policies, programs and budget.

Joe Crozier, GWAEA chief administrator, said, "Our board is a dedicated group who continuously demonstrate their commitment to serving students and families through their leadership roles with the AEA. This month is a great opportunity to thank them for their service to our agency."

We would like to recognize and thank the members of the Grant Wood AEA Board of Directors for their commitment and dedication.

A Retirement Message from Joe Crozier

Over the years my friends and colleagues have heard me remark about my view of something from the lens of ‘a small town kid from Melcher, Iowa.’ Before I became the Chief Administrator for one of Iowa’s AEAs I was indeed a boy in rural Iowa who had few aspirations beyond high school graduation.

My career has taken an interesting path full of learning and connections, but it started on a route not unlike that of the students we support. Last month I mused about that learning and presented my summary of highlights and learning opportunities for our local superintendents, and talked about my work life that started with lawn mowing, detasseling corn and working at a gas station.

Joe Crozier
GWAEA
Chief Administrator

I landed at Graceland College simply because I had the opportunity to play football there, and that athletic connection ended up putting me on a career path better than what I ever would have envisioned. It was enriched along the way with leadership roles connected to student learning, and is culminating with what has been one that’s the most rewarding: working alongside some of the best educational consultants and leaders in our state.

Episode 43 Interview with Joe Crozier

You can listen to reflections of my career by downloading the May edition of EdTech Takeout, the podcast produced by our Digital Learning team, which came out this week. Until then, I leave you with two recommendations from your outgoing Chief Administrator. First, don’t blink. Life really does go faster than you think. And second, take care of yourself and your family. Regardless of the career path you find yourself traveling, my hope for all of you is that you’ll enjoy the peaks and the valleys along the ride as I have.
