Grant Wood AEA Mission: To ensure success for all learners.

Grant Wood AEA goals

GWAEA PRIDE: Proudly Recognizing Innovation, Dedication & Excellence

Peggy Daugherty and Melanie Reese, GWAEA consultants, reach fidelity as LEAP classroom trainers. Three LEAP teachers achieve scores from 93-97; the national average is 87.

Grant Wood AEA PRIDE

GWAEA staff and educators participate in LEAP Program training on May 18.

The Grant Wood AEA Early Education staff have been working with several preschool classrooms for the past two years to reach fidelity with the LEAP (Learning Experiences: an Alternative Program for Preschoolers) program, which emphasizes embedding learning opportunities into daily classroom routines.

LEAP classrooms explicitly teach typically developing peers to facilitate social and language skills for children with autism. Teachers use evidence-based interventions and use ongoing, daily data to drive interventions.

Three teachers in the LEAP program (Abbie Petche and Libby Richardson, Cedar Rapids and
Peggy Wakefield, Linn-Mar) achieved scores from 93-97 when the national average is 87.

Jeanie Wade Nagle, GWAEA Early Education supervisor, shared, "Some teachers do not reach fidelity on the first opportunity. These teachers have seen significant improvements in the social skills of their students and feel they are much stronger teachers having gone through this coaching process. Team planning with all working in the classrooms – teachers, paraeducators, SLPs, and consultants – help lead to success as all staff know how to implement the strategies."

Grant Wood AEA has supported these LEAP classrooms with consultants and SLPs to help the teachers reach fidelity. Peggy Daugherty, GWAEA special education consultant, and Melanie Reese, GWAEA early education consultant, have worked closely with consultants from The University of Colorado, Denver and reached fidelity as trainers of LEAP classrooms as well. Congratulations!
