Open Minds, Open Doors Conference planned Oct. 11

22nd year of STEM conference for middle school girls

Grant Wood AEA Open Minds, Open Doors

The Grant Wood AEA Open Minds, Open Doors Conference is celebrating 22 years of introducing STEM careers to area middle school girls.

Grant Wood AEA collaborates with the Association of University Women (AAUW) and Coe College to provide the annual Open Minds, Open Doors conference, a half-day conference intended to encourage middle school girls (7th-8th grades) to pursue career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). More than 500 girls will be participating in this year's event.

Accompanied by a teacher from their school, the girls attend hands-on workshops, and a "lunch and learn" rotation including the STEM Expo and an auditorium-style presentation. The presenters are professional women from the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor who volunteer their time.

For information about the Open Minds, Open Doors Conference, contact Susie Green, GWAEA student programs specialist, ext. 6775.

United Way Campaign Running
Oct. 10-Nov. 1

United Way

Our staff have firsthand knowledge of the need to support their fellow neighbors, and as an organization, we'll again launch a charitable giving campaign to encourage staff to support the community through gifts to nonprofit organizations of their choosing.

Each year our GWAEA United Way campaign raises between $15-18,000 for the United Way of East Central Iowa and the United Way of Washington and Johnson Counties. For those who are less familiar with this organization, the United Way focuses on education, financial stability, and health issues in our community. They help raise awareness surrounding key issues, provide services to those most in need, and promote social change that helps strengthen people and our communities.

We again will offer payroll deduction and one-time giving opportunities for our staff to lend their support to the United Way, and next month all staff will receive an email with an e-Pledge login to access a secure portal to make a donation.

This year there will be a matching grant available to help boost the gifts given to the United Way. The Hall-Perrine Foundation will offer a 1:1 match for all first time donations, and a 1:1 match for any increased gift pledged during this year's campaign.

Additionally, payroll deductions also are available for staff interested in supporting Iowa Shares, a statewide coalition of social change, environmental and cultural nonprofit organizations. Iowa Shares members give direct services and create progressive, long-lasting resources for children and communities. Online giving is not available for Iowa Shares, but campaign literature is available for staff and can be requested through Renee Nelson in Communications.

CISM Team attends presentation with Kevin Hines

Members of the Grant Wood AEA Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) team joined together to attend a special presentation last week. The community event, "A Message of HOPE," brought together representatives of the mental health and suicide prevention fields along with members of the community to hear guest speaker Kevin Hines. Kevin survived jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge and now travels the world spreading a message of suicide prevention, suicide awareness, and hope.

Professional Learning Registration

We are pleased to have launched our new statewide Professional Learning registration system.  Key features of this new system include being able to view and register for professional learning opportunities across the state from one site, all courses and workshops completed at any AEA in Iowa will be on one transcript, and the log in is familiar with only one username and password to remember for the training system (for mandatory trainings) and the PL registration system.

We do ask that you preregister for all professional learning activities. This allows adequate time to prepare for materials and room space so that the professional learning session is comfortable for both presenters and participants. You may continue to use professional learning dollars to cover registration fees (following HR policies).  If your participation is being covered by a region or program budget, please work with your supervisor and support staff to confirm the budget.  You will register into the system using directions provided by your support staff.  Your support staff will not be registering you unless special arrangements are made.  Paper registrations are no longer used by the PL office to preregister.

All participants must register including practicum and intern students and student teachers as this allows us to ensure materials and space is adequate for all events.

Professional learning surveys are available and we would kindly ask for your timely feedback from any professional learning session that you attend. The planners and presenters both value the session feedback.

Transcripts and certificates of completion are available for download or print from your registration log in.

If you have any questions, please contact Lisa, Sue or Sherry in the Professional Learning office.
