Grant Wood AEA Mission: To ensure success for all learners.

Grant Wood AEA goals

On the Road with John Speer

When I visited with Creative Services one snowy day last month,
I was stunned at the scope of services available through their department.

On the Road with John Speer - Grant Wood AEA

I met the agency’s new graphic designer, Katie Suther, who was just completing her second week on the job, and Stu Weinbrenner, who is marking his 45th year of service with the AEA.

Katie and Stu, along with Hope Runge and Mary Kray, explained to me how the department has evolved over the years.

John Speer joins staff and students in a classroom.

Their creative touch is evident in subtle ways like the digital sign at the front of the agency, and on the envelopes they print for use by our payroll and finance teams. The team often supports banner, booklet and flyer requests for staff who are presenting information to districts or at conferences. They support other AEA initiatives across the state as well, through print requests to support FastBridge literacy and math.

Iowa state code prohibits AEA print shops from competing for print and creative service business from for-profit organizations, but our AEA can support non-profit organizations. We produce information for the Linn County Food Bank, the United Way, the League of Women Voters, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Iowa Association of School Libraries.

John Speer joins staff and students in a classroom.

Most surprising to me was the array of products available for districts. We used AEA Creative Services extensively when I was at College Community, and I still wasn’t aware of all that’s available. In addition to the vinyl signage, canvas prints and student materials like core boards and PODD books, the team has created vinyl signage for sensory pathways in the hallways at one district!

I walked away from my visit with a short to-do list of my own, and the first item on it was to arrange for a time when our local superintendents can get an overview like the one I received. I look forward to helping connect our districts with the fantastic team that supports this work.

GWAEA security badge update

Update your card by early March for door access

Grant Wood AEA logo

Grant Wood AEA is currently in the process of upgrading our ID badge security cards to a new format. The new cards security technology is a higher level than the previous cards to increase building security.  We have been issuing out the new cards since last summer so many staff already have them.   We will be upgrading our security software in the middle of March, at that time the older card formats will no longer function.

Do I need a new card?
The security piece of these cards provides card reader door access at Northern Facility and 33rd Avenue buildings. If you do not need door access to either of these facilities then no further action is needed. The new cards have a small blue logo on the back that says “HID iClass DL.” If your card already says this then you do not need to take any further action.

If your card does not say “HID iClass DL” on the back then it does need to be changed out with a new card. If you need door access, please have your card changed out by early March.

If you have an ID picture on file, we can reprint the same picture on your card. If you would like to update your photo this is a great time to have the new photo taken. Please feel free to stop by between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Technology Support area to have your new card made. Call Kathy Briggs ahead of time at ext. 6720 to have her pre-print the card with your old picture so it is ready to go when you arrive.  Please return your old ID card at the same time.
