Grant Wood AEA Mission: To ensure success for all learners.

Grant Wood AEA goals

An invitation from New Chief Administrator John Speer

Grant Wood AEA logo

Thanks for joining me and the members of our organization last Wednesday as we kicked off the start of another academic year. I enjoyed being part of the celebration and sharing a little bit about myself and my initial thoughts on why we exist as an AEA as I launch into my first year as chief administrator.

As I mentioned in the meeting, I believe this is the best educational position in the state of Iowa, and I'm excited to be leading a committed and service oriented group of professionals. I’ve been a proud supporter of the AEAs both as an educator and as an administrator, and it’s nothing short of a dream come true to have a leadership role at Grant Wood AEA.

While I’ve worked closely with the AEA’s programs and services for years, I understand that the work ‘behind the scenes’ is sometimes much different from what is visible to district partners. I want to understand more about the work of our AEA, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than to see the work from the perspective of GWAEA staff. As I mentioned last week, I’m going to take time over the next several months to visit with some of you and learn more about your work. I hope to begin my tours with agency staff sometime in late September or early October. If you’re interested in allowing me to shadow you for a few hours, so I can really see and understand your work, I’d love to hear from you. (And be sure to watch future editions of The Bulletin Board for photos, video clips and my personal reflections from these visits as I share about my learning.)

It’s going to be a great year.

Take care,
John S.
Grant Wood AEA Chief Administrator

The Carpool Lane launches

Since our agency formed 40 years ago we’ve understood the importance of providing parents and caregivers meaningful opportunities to participate in the planning and provision of educational services for their children. Now we’re expanding on that concept.

This fall GWAEA Communications will be reaching out to district staff and PTO organizations to introduce The Carpool Lane, a new blog where AEA staff will share tips on behavior strategies, literacy, math and speech tips and resources, and other information to help students at home.
Communications will be working with staff in a variety of disciplines to gather some of their most-requested resources, the tools that are most frequently shared with parents, and will summarize this information for parents and caregivers through the blog.

GWAEA staff are encouraged to help the agency spread information from The Carpool Lane. Follow The Carpool Lane on Facebook
@GWAEACarpoolLane
or follow the blog online at gwaea.org/carpool.

Staff also can help spread the word about The Carpool Lane by clicking “Invite your friends to like this page” from The Carpool Lane page in Facebook and then add the following text:

“Hi, I'm inviting you to like The Carpool Lane, a new blog where my AEA colleagues will be sharing tips and resources to help students!”

Have questions about The Carpool Lane? Contact Public Relations Coordinator Renee Nelson for more information.

  • If you are working in an assigned space, make sure your mobile file pedestal is available to have the cushion installed on Friday.

  • If you have not already emptied your boxes, please do so as soon as possible in advance of the deadline on Sept. 7. This will help us to determine if additional storage is needed.

Iowa Department of Education Releases First Installment of ESSA Guidance

The Iowa Department of Education released the first installment of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) guidance that it will provide this year. This guidance will be provided in a number of installments during the 2018-19 school year and will be timed to align with actions that districts will be completing throughout the year (e.g., consolidated applications, preparation for implementing Targeted and Comprehensive Supports, etc.)

The Department will use a consistent template for its guidance, which will include a short executive summary as well as a more extended document that will dive into detail. Each ESSA guidance document will be emailed directly to districts from the Department and can also be found on the Department's website at Consolidated ESSA Title Guidance. Any questions regarding ESSA should be directed to Dave Tilly at the department.
