Leadership sessions provided support for Iowa Core

Iowa Core
  • September 13 8:30 – 12:00  Fall Collaborative Peer Review of Iowa Core Implementation Plan:  We organized (as well as possible) by geography, size, and demographics.  Solon is included in the North and Central 3 A and 4 A districts.  Solon leadership team members (not necessarily the entire team – you can decide) will be partnered with another AEA 10 school in this group to review and provide feedback on plans.  When this state-wide process was being developed, the schools that participated shared VERY positive and appreciative remarks.


  • September 13 1:00 – 4:00 (same day as peer review – to make sub arrangements easier for schools)  Session 1 of Iowa Core Leadership Academy 2010-2011 -  half day
  • September 14, 8:30 – 12:00 (same day as first curriculum directors and central office staff meeting at GWAEA)

Alignment Tools – Iowa Core Outcome 4   - overview of 3 tools: ICAT-  Iowa Curriculum Alignment Tool, Power School Alignment, and Curriculum Mapper
This workshop fits VERY well with your implementation plan for this year – that you plan to explore alignment options during the 10-11 year and begin the process in 11-12.

  • October 5, all day – Curriculum Mapper Training Workshop– for schools that have chosen or are currently using Curriculum Mapper… so if Solon were to choose this tool, you could get some up front training underway.


  • October 12, Coaching for Improvement workshop (very exciting opportunity)  We will have guest coaches from business (John Myers, Cedar River Mill) athletics (Coach Ben Jacobsen UNI Men’s BB) and educational  (instructional coaches from our area)
  • October 27 I have a Plan Iowa and Compass workshop - AM or PM session (pertinent to counselors and secondary staff)


  • December 15 – Sarah Brown Wessling (National Teacher of the Year) will facilitate a full day workshop – target audience Iowa Core lead teams.
  • January 31, 2011 – full day – Second session Iowa Core Leadership Academy 10-11


  • March 8, 2011 – Dr. Susan Leddick – Iowa Core Leadership

Session 1: Globalization and American Education, Oct. 1, 2009

Yong Zhao, Ph.D., Michigan State University, emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for students to engage in problem solving and encouraged participants to celebrate and enhance students’ opportunities to explore and develop their creativity. Joining Dr. Zhao was Jack Harris, a local business leader with Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, who encouraged participants to provide students with opportunities to engage in math, science, and technology projects, areas of anticipated future labor market shortages.

Session 2: Redesigning High Schools, Nov. 9, 2009

Fred Bramante, past chairman and member of New Hampshire’s State Board of Education and instruction combined with community resources to provide anytime/anywhere student-learning experiences. Joining Mr. Bramante were educators and students from the Sigourney Community Schools, who shared information about the eSigourney Entrepreneurial Academy for Leadership. eSEAL incorporates community resources in the learning process through student entrepreneurial businesses and internships.

Session 3: Technology and 21st Century Skills, Jan. 28, 2010
Scott McLeod, J.D., Ph.D., Iowa State University, discussed the expansion of technology as a tool to enhance student learning. Joining Dr. McLeod was Jeff Dicks, superintendent/high school principal of the Newell-Fonda Community Schools, who presented a model of providing quality technology experiences for students through a 1:1 laptop project. This project permits students to interact with students in other school districts and other countries such as Brazil.  Teachers are also using some on-line resources to support assessment of students.  One of the on-line assessment tools may reached by entering Kubbu on Google.  Individuals may acquire further information about Dr. McLeod’s presentation by entering

Session 4: Formative Assessment, April 21, 2010

Margaret Heritage, assistant director for Professional Development at the National Center for Research and Evaluation, UCLA, presented a session focused on formative assessment. Dr. Heritage shared the purpose and importance of formative assessment or assessment for learning. This continuous assessment for learning provides frequent feedback to teachers and students to guide instruction to help close the gap between current and expected achievement and to guide new learning for students.

Joining Dr. Heritage were Amy Jabens, College Community Schools, Matt Townsley, Solon Community Schools, and Eric Townsley, Benton Community Schools who shared their examples and experiences with formative assessment practices in their classrooms.
