Eastern iowa Compact seeks to improve area schools

A group of area superintendents in the Eastern Iowa area have signed on to a compact to improve schools in the area. The group has committed to a achieving a vision of Eastern Iowa becoming recognized as “the most progressive, cutting-edge place for learning and achievement in the nation and world. It is the place where the deepest learning, the most successful innovation and the highest achievement happens routinely.”

As a kick-off to initiate this work, Jamie Vollmer, former president of the Great Midwestern Ice Cream Company, and author of a recently published book “Schools Cannot Do It Alone,” will be speaking at various meetings throughout the Cedar Rapids community on Wednesday, Oct. 5. In the morning, Vollmer will address school superintendents in the AEA10 service area at the Grant Wood AEA conference center. In the afternoon, from 2 to 4 p.m., he will talk with community leaders in Cedar Rapids at the Rex Eno conference room in the human services facility downtown Cedar Rapids. The meeting is open to the public. In the evening at the Grant Wood AEA conference center from 6:00-8:30 p.m., he will have a third session with principals, superintendents and community leaders such as school board members. Vollmer, once a harsh critic of education, has become known for his strong advocacy on behalf of public education. The focus of his talks will be about increasing the engagement of area communities in helping move education forward.

The superintendents have posted information regarding their compact on a website: www.commitandact4kids.org. Members of the community are invited to sign on to the compact and participate in the conversation about improving education. Links to other important initiatives, including the Governor’s Blueprint for Education are also listed on the site.

In addition to this work, a second initiative has been announced, which is being supported by members of the www.iowatransformED.com site. The site is challenging students to make a video showing their community what they would like school to be. The contest asks, “What if you could change everything about the way you learn?” To see the call for entries posted by students, follow this link to www.iowatransformED.com.
