STEM Day at the Capitol, Wednesday, March 7, 2012

The Grant Wood AEA Corridor STEM Initiative (CSI) will join exhibitors during STEM Day at the Capitol, Wednesday, March 7, 2012, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will be held in the 2nd Floor Rotunda, State Capitol, Des Moines.

Given the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) to Iowa’s economy and quality of life, STEM Day at the Capitol has become an annual tradition of the Iowa Mathematics & Science Education Partnership as a means for communicating to Iowa’s lawmakers the many wonderful ways that the excitement and opportunity of STEM are being brought to youth.

The exhibition includes an array of in-school, out-of-school and lifetime learning displays of many of our state’s assets in STEM, ranging from the Girl Scouts to our universities, from 4-H to the Iowa Academy of Science, from K-12 to our community colleges, and from nonprofits to industries and trade organizations.

Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds are scheduled to speak, reinforcing their commitments to STEM education. Valued partners John Deere, Pella Corporation and Rockwell Collins make the event happen through their sponsorship.

Grant Wood AEA’s Corridor STEM Initiative works to promote student interest in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) CSI is a coalition of area partners interested in building for the future by investing today in STEM education. Support is offered for after-school STEM programs through awarding mini-grants and for support through the agency’s Van Allen Science Teaching Center Teacher-In-Residence. The teacher-in-residence provides increased support and professional development for teachers and support personnel as they connect the after-school activities to every day instruction and district curriculum.

Yukiko Hill, a teacher with the Iowa City Community School District, is the 2011-2012 VAST teacher-in-residence. Hill explained, “Lisa Hall, a teacher with the Iowa City Community School District and CSI grant site teacher and six of her students will be representing the Corridor STEM Initiative at STEM Day at the Capitol.”
