Career Enhancement Opportunity

Grant Wood AEA has received a grant to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education in the area. This one year funding includes the support of a Teacher in Residence position for the 2011-2012 school year. We are seeking an elementary or middle school teacher with a strong interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

This individual will work in collaboration with the VAST Center science team on projects to accomplish the mission of the VAST Center to provide leadership and support for exemplary science teaching which will ensure the success of all learners and in particular to enhance STEM education in area schools.  This work would involve working with classroom teachers, as well as Before and After School directors to increase awareness of STEM education and assist with implementation of STEM curriculum.

This is a full-time position supporting classroom teachers with STEM education implementation for one year. The individual serving in this position would remain an employee of their home district and return to an assignment within the district the following year. This is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills, learn new knowledge and expand technology expertise.

Specific responsibilities for this position include:
• Planning and conducting professional development sessions to prepare teachers to implement K-8 science curriculum kits.
•  Providing professional development for staff and volunteers involved in 3-5 and 6-8 before/after school enrichment programs
• Work to complete online curriculum “toolkits” and a CSI website for teacher use as resources when implementing science curriculum units.
• Representing the Corridor STEM Initiative at local, regional and state events.
• Collaborating with state and community organizations to promote STEM education.
• Visiting and observing classrooms to provide support to teachers and monitor implementation of STEM-related education.
• Collaborate in the development of CSI project replication materials and dissemination activities.
• Active involvement in the AEA-wide STEM committee in planning & strategy implementation.
