Reading Endorsement

Drake University School of Education in collaboration with Grant Wood AEA offers the Reading Endorsement (K-6 or 7-12) as an addition to the Iowa Teaching License. Most teachers licensed in the last 15 years need just 3-5 courses in the areas of Literacy, Assessment, Special Populations, Practical and Reading in the Content Area. The courses required for the endorsement will be determined following a review of your transcripts. As of June 1, 2004, teachers pursuing endorsements of 12 credits or less no longer have to complete an entrance examination. Drake will guarantee that all of the classes will be delivered in a one-year sequence. All of these courses are offered in a distance learning format (a combination of ICN and on-line courses). Courses can transfer to Drake's Effective Teaching Master's Degree. If you are interested in pursuing a Reading Endorsement, please contact Sherry Sines, 399-6517, 800-798-9771 ext. 6517 at Grant Wood AEA or Margaret Burns-Fess, Drake University Reading Endorsement Coordinator, 1-800-44-DRAKE ext. 3888 or reading@drake.edu.

Middle School Endorsement Program

This program completes an endorsement for middle school (grades five through eight) in the state of Iowa. The holder of this endorsement is authorized to teach ALL subjects in grades five through eight with the exception of art, industrial arts, music, reading, physical education, and special education. The endorsement is an "add-on" endorsement to Iowa general Elementary Endorsement (K-6) license or Iowa Secondary Level Endorsements (7-12), so the candidate for this endorsement must currently hold either a valid Iowa teacher's license at the elementary or secondary level, or be currently seeking endorsement at the elementary or secondary level.
The full endorsement is 27-42 hours. Drake University offers the two core courses online. Students must meet the other course obligations through their undergraduate education, or take the courses through Drake, another university, or a community college. Transfer credits must be approved and a transcript review will determine any requirements students have already completed. A minimum of 6 credits must be completed through Drake for the university to authorize an endorsement.

For questions regarding transfer credit, transcript reviews, or specific courses, contact Todd Hodgkinson at 1-800-44-DRAKE, ext. 4565 or todd.hodgkinsoon@gmail.com
